Getting on with it....

1km Down

Last night I started the challenge with a 1,000m swim.

It was less painful than I anticipated, but I had less time than I expected since I only manage to get in the pool 25 minutes before kicking out time so that raised the effort level required a little.

This time it was a mixture of 3 strokes - front and back crawl with breaststroke when I needed a breather - in rough 3rds.  Over time this will hopefully become more front crawl and less of the rest as my fitness (and speed) improve.

Progress Made

    Lengths (25m):  2,800 - 40 = 2,760
    Metres :               70,000 - 1,000 = 69,000
    Km:                       70 - 1 = 69

Swimathon 2008

After spending 20 years saying "I must do more exercise" I've set myself a public challenge that means I have to do more than think about it.  I've signed up for Swimathon in 2008 the which is raising funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.

I am a competent swimmer, even when unfit, so have opted for a distance challenge to be completed
over a period of 14 weeks , rather than take part in a one off challenge.  So my challenge is to swim a total distance of 70km by the 20th of April.

I have to swim an average of 5km per week to achieve this which means heading to a pool 2 - 3 times per week, depending on time available and my level of fitness.  In a 25m pool (most commonly available distance around Edinburgh) this equates to 200 lengths per week and the challenge itself is to complete 2,800 lengths in total.

Since a number of people have already opted to sponsor me both inside and outside Sun I am choosing to use the Sun blog facility to share progress.
