Today spent part of the day try to get Thunderbird to work with growl. Finally after a lot of tinkering and testing got it to work. If you want to get growl to work for you go http://www.neilturner.me.uk/2005/Nov/04/growl_and_thunderbird.html The part I got hung up on was when he says to:
Save this somewhere where you can access it - mine’s in my home folder - and then open a terminal and type chmod u+x growlNotify to give the script execute permissions.
I thought he was talking about permission for the growlnotify in your /usr/local/bin folder when in actually it was the shell script that need to be copied to your home folder.

There is a simpler way, it's just a plugin for thunderbird. Although the description is deceiving (it has a bunch of stuff about firefox download complete notification) if you right click it and save as ... etc. install it in thunderbird and your set. No hassles. Check out my post on it.
