Localized docs.sun.com

Last Dec. DSC had Language selection controls and available on any page. But the localized content was not ready at that time, e.g.the Simplified Chinese page will show Traditional Chinese. Later, all selections went to English page. Today I checked the page and found all selections work very well. It provide us more friendly interface when we searching document on it. Check it out.

Firefox download day

In the past 2 years, I have participated 2 times Firefox test day in Sun Microsystems Beijing ERI site for Firefox 2 and Firefox 3. It's really an different experience from my daily work. Working with engineers in Mozilla team around the world especial community lead in Europe, to discuss test cases and bugs. Tracking the bug ticket and verify the bug fix. I was fortunate to won 1 time Top bug finder at test day.(with prize :-) ) Besides standard test cases, we Asian Globalization Center (AGC) team also provided CCK locales test for this event. Fortunately (again), Yugo was won another Top bug finder by test FF in Korean locale.
Now, it's time to harvest. Don't hesitate to try it and let us know your opinion.
Just keep in mind:
It's never late to participate in the community;
It's always easy to participate in the community.

各取所需:Firefox extensions
给大家分享三个 Firefox 的插件,一个实用,一个添彩儿,一个绝对娱乐。
Firefox Showcase [下载]
实用:显示所有打开窗口和标签页的缩略图
特别适合 Project Manager 管理项目,需要同时打开很多页面而且不断切换。安装完毕会在查看菜单下添加一个 Showcase 子菜单。个性化定制很丰富,但有点复杂。默认配置即可。
ColorfulTabs [下载]
美观:随机给每个 Tab 分配不同的颜色
让浏览器不在永远灰、白、蓝。
All-in-One Gestures [下载]
娱乐:定制命令到鼠标手势
拿起鼠标随便画画就能执行操作命令。例如,按下鼠标右键并向左拖动鼠标则意味着“后退”命令。记得几年前看过一个美国“风投”的节目里有过类似的创意。个人觉得它的卖点不应该是提高效率而应该是开发智力。装上插件,换到左手鼠标模式,让我们一起开发右脑吧!

What's OLT? What's XLIFF?
For those who want to join Open Source Translation Projects.
The content are copied from OLT project website. Made some minor changes.
- 1. What's OLT and used for?
OLT - Open Language Tools
The OLT are a set of translation tools that aim to make the task of translating software and documentation easier. Initially, they comprise of a full-featured XLIFF Translation Editor and a set of XLIFF file-filters for a number of documentation and software file formats. They are based around common industry standards such as XLIFF and TMX and are implemented in Java.
- 2. What are the XLIFF and TMX ?
XLIFF - XML Localisation Interchange File Format
TMX - Translation Memory eXchange
XLIFF and TMX are localisation industry-standard file formats used during the translation process.
XLIFF is a container-format expressed in XML that allows us to abstract translatable from non-translatable content from a source file format, and track the various pieces of metadata that are produced during the translation process (eg. word count, notes to translators, translation review status, etc.) Once a file has been converted to XLIFF, it can be processed by any tool that understands the XLIFF format (rather than each tool needing to be customised to support the original file type).
TMX is related to XLIFF, but instead of being a container format that contains the state of a file in translation, it's a format that was designed for the interchange of completed translations, (sometimes called translation memory data) between tools. You could think of a TMX file being the final representation of a set of translated material that can then be poured into a database for future reuse.
The Open Language Tools project includes a way to convert XLIFF files that contain completed and reviewed translations into TMX files.
Documentation file types
* HTML
* Docbook SGML
* JSP
* XML (generic - needs a configuration file for each XML type)
* OpenOffice.org : sxw, sxc, sxi
* Plain text
Software file types
* PO/POT (gettext)
* Msg/tmsg (catgets)
* Java .properties
* Java ResourceBundle
* Mozilla .DTD resource files
- 4. What is the XLIFF Translation Editor ?

- 5. What are the XLIFF filters ?
The XLIFF filters are a set of programs/libraries that can convert several different source file formats to XLIFF. See more.
- 6. What platforms do the OLT run on ?
The Open Language Tools are developed and used on a mixture of platforms including Solaris, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
- 7. Where can I get the OLT ?

Where to get a free Solaris DVD?
My job position have a lot of opportunities to co-work with interns. When we discussed learning Solaris in the universities. They always said they do very interest in Solaris and other Sun technologies. But it's not easy to find Solaris to install on their PC. Solaris is a free and cool OS but download the whole DVD from internet, you know the edu network.
A-ha, it's really an unexcepted reason. Sun held many activities, conferences in the past few years and delivered the Solaris DVD during the meeting. But is it enough? For most of students in the universities they just want to get a DVD more easier. It is the time now.
A website to learn Unix technologies. Just register and leave your contact information, the administrator will send you a latest SXDE (Solaris Express Developer Edition) DVD without any pay. This activity started from Jan 23 and will be ended on Mar 31. Don't hesitate, just go and get it.

Work from home news from Bejing gov.

Sina.com, on Jan 20, reported that to solve the traffic jam problem during rush hour, Beijing government will try to switch the Open/Close time for big commercial departments and some of shopping malls, and will implement the flextime for science academies and IT companies. Especially encourage Work From Home.
Looks familiar?
Of course, we are doing this way now. I don't know when Sun started the flextime, I only know to work flexible is one of Sun's culture. And started from 2 years ago, Sun fully supported employees in Beijing to work from home. We can remotely operate our machines and servers in lab or office, we can easy find workmates by phone or Instant Messenger client wherever they are. Cool, isn't it? But not just this.
One of my workmate living at TongZhou. He spent at least 4 hours per day on his way to office and back to home. We always say Beijing subway corporation should award him a medal to praise his support to Beijing subway. He took the BaTong line near his home and -> line No.1 -> line No.2 -> line No.13. 6:00 pm, he took them again with opposite order. Now, he can work from home. He can save the money, save the energy, and the most important, he own 4 additional hours for himself for each day.
Besides that, we decrease the hours that drive at rush hour. Actually we won't drive for most of days in a week. It's hard to say how much improvement to Beijing's traffic and air which our way made, but as a Chinese saying "Don't fail to do good even if it's small."
Start now,not too late。

To view Asian characters from Xmanager
You may need to login Solaris from home, and also need remote Solaris desktop with Asian (JKCC) characters displayed like me who is working at Globalization team. Xmanager is a good choice.
The default Xmanager install package may not include all fonts that you need especially for Asian languages. You need to download the font package, install and set the font path for your language.
Here is a step by step example:
1. Go to Xmanager website to download the font package.
2. Install it to where your Xmanager located. (C:\Program Files\NetSarang\Xmanager2\Fonts)
3. Open Xconfig, and add your language to each config file from "Properties" -> "Font".
That's it.
