This Webinar is a deep dive into Project Darkstar, an
open-source software platform that simplifies the development of
horizontally scalable servers for online games. More than just a
communications framework, Project Darkstar boasts a simple API that
transparently provides a multithreaded, transactional, persistent, and scalable system without the need for zones or shards.
Any potential developer of networked games, virtual worlds, social
networking software, or other online applications will benefit from
this technical session, which provides an overview of the API and how
the technology directly addresses demands for the short user response
time and low latency which are at odds with the high-throughput focus
of modern systems architectures. It also covers:
* Typical technical challenges faced when developing scalable networked games and similar applications
* The actual design and code of Project Snowman, a new 3-D action game built with Project Darkstar
This webinar will be given by Owen Kellett. Owen is a graduate of
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he earned a BS in Computer
Science in 2004 and an MS in Computer Science in 2005. There, he
actively participated in research projects involving computability
theory as well as distributed systems. His Master's Thesis was on the
Busy Beaver problem and the computational power of the human mind in
the context of this problem. In 2005, Owen joined Sun Microsystems in
Burlington, MA as a member of the X64 Systems group. There he
contributed to test automation efforts as well as built the test
automation infrastructure currently used throughout the group. Since
2008, Owen has been a member of the project darkstar team at Sun
Microsystems. When he's not at his desk, Owen is likely either playing
ultimate frisbee, or running.
