Sun really needs to step up and take the lead on this. I would have subscribed to a Sun Ray/SGD service long ago. Unfortunately, no such service exists. Rather than offer a service to the general public, Sun has provided the tools to third parties to do so. Sun doesn't want to compete with it's customers, yet they are far better situated to initially provide such a service than any of their customers.

Lacking such a service, I've repeatedly rolled my own using a variety of techniques. At one point, that meant running my own Sun Ray server at home, but I was never really happy with the speed. I'm sure that has to do with my lack of admin skills, rather than with limitations of the protocol.

My current solution is to use Windows as an RDP server for access within my home. ViewSonic Airpanels make good RDP clients and are now reasonably priced on eBay. Used Mac Minis are cheap and run a variety of remote access protocols well.

Unfortunately, it is still my responsibility to administer my system. I think I'm reasonably good about most things except backup. So, even though I've been forced to roll-my-own, I would buy a better solution if one was available.

Sun does offer a limited service at this time through network.com. It's called CxoNet, they have about 300 people on it. It's currently a trail. I have a personal desktop (wireless SunRay) at home that is run from CxoNet as do a number of other executives.

Do you have a direct link? I searched network.com and found nary a trace.
