During the past two weeks, Sun Microsystems Federal (Sun Fed) Chairman Scott McNealy, Vice President of Federal Sales Anthony Robbins and I had the pleasure of meeting with several systems integrators (SI) to re-introduce the new Sun Fed and its line of Sun Microsystems products.
More than 90% of Sun Fed’s sales are conducted via our SIs and channel partners. Unlike some other infrastructure providers, we never compete with our channel partners. We are only successful when our SIs and partners are able to fully understand our solutions and generate sales.
As a result, we wanted to make sure that everyone walked away understanding three key things about the new Sun Microsystems and the new SunFed:
1. We are totally open source. Solaris, Trusted Solaris, Java, you name it. If it has a Sun brand on it, it is open sourced and fully based on open standards. We are compatible with any device from Sun to Dell to IBM to Microsoft. There are no “closed” versions of our operating systems. Yet, all Sun open source products are fully indemnified and fully secure.
2. We’re growing and we’re here for the long haul. Sun continues to grow and gain market share. We are now the #3 global provider of enterprise servers and more than 37% of the world’s data is stored on Sun platforms. We continue to spend $2 billion per year on R & D and we expect to continue to innovate and expand our product capabilities.
3. We reduce power demands so you can reduce costs. Gartner predicts that by 2012, 40% of IT budgets will go to power costs --- Not if we have anything to do about it. The average data center uses 90 barrels of oil per day! Sun’s infrastructure solutions are designed to maintain performance, while reducing energy demand. From our chips to are enterprise servers, you’ll find that we use up to 40% less energy than our competitors. When we discuss eco, we are highlighting both the ecological AND the economic benefits of our products.
So, it is really three simple messages: We’re open. We’re here. We’re reducing your operating costs while maintaining or increasing your computing power.
