The new Sun Fire CoolThreads systems are among the most innovative technology breakthroughs ever seen in the enterprise. Improved security, energy efficiency, reduced use of space, and significantly higher performance all result in millions of dollars in cost savings, especially when considering datacenter consolidation and expanding web infrastructure. The new processor uses less power than a light bulb. It generates less heat despite the massive increase in throughput. I've seen a single CoolThreads System replace dozens of other larger, hotter, slower servers to accomplish the same job, thus greatly reducing server footprint requirements in the datacenter. Those replaced systems required tens of thousands of watts to power compared to the few hundred watts the CoolThreads system uses. Suddenly, HVAC is hardly an issue. To get a better idea of the energy, space and throughput efficiencies, there is a new metric called SWaP (stands for Space, Watts, and Performance). The simple formula for SWaP is...

SWaP = Performance / (Space * Power Consumption)

The smaller and more energy efficient the system, the higher the SWAP rating. An example of this metric is given on the Get Off the "Itanic" website.

I have spoken with some happy customers who have been using these new Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology and they've been impressed by the performance and zero-pain binary compatibility. Not surprisingly, Sun IT has started using them internally and it makes me excited about the benefits they bring to Sun, our customers and the planet.
