Sting / Annie Lennox Concert Review
And yet another concert review for your reading enjoyment...I went to see Sting & Annie Lennox on Saturday night (10/2) as part of Sting's "Sacred Love" tour at the Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View.I tend to have to agree wholeheartedly with the recent San Jose Mercury review of this concert ... Annie should have been the headliner and Sting her opener. I had my first exposure to Annie back in the 80's when she was a member of the Eurythmics and while she had a very strong voice, now, she can only be equated to a fine wine...her voice, in my opinion, has become better over time. She sang some of the old favorites, like "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" and "Here Comes the Rain" but she also sprinkled in some of the songs from her new album...I particularly liked "Pavement Cracks" and of course, she saved the best for last when she performed "Why" from an earlier album.
Talk about a shock when Sting came out on stage in a black suit...who woulda thunk it that the lead singer of The Police had gone "stuffy." He also performed some of the old favorites which always got the crowd on their feet but most of the time, they were right back in their seats when he moved on to perform songs from his new album. Of course, we were the loudest when Annie came back out and they did sang a duet together! I did think he went a bit far on the staging for "Sacred Love" especially since there were kids in the audience...he basically had three women in various stages of undress on huge screens behind him and they proceeded to do dances like you'd see in a strip club, not that I've ever been in a strip club!!!
One of the highlights of his set was when he mentioned that it was his 53rd birthday and the crowd proceeded to sing "Happy Birthday" to him, I think that we made his night! Besides, how often do you get to say that you've sung "Happy Birthday" to a celebrity in your lifetime? ( Oct 06 2004, 10:51:05 AM PDT ) Permalink
