I thought I would write a blog entry about my recent experience with my Compaq laptop, the effort to fix it and the eventual modification that occurred. I am the owner of a very nicely designed Compaq X1000 series laptop. 15” wide screen, ATI 9200 mobility graphics card, 512MB PC2100 RAM and a good mobile processor. Under then Centrino marketing brand, it actually offers the battery life (3.5-4 hours) and light weight (just over 6lbs) as advertised. For someone who travels as much as I do, this laptop is great and it a respectable game player as well!

Anyhoo, about 10 months ago, my LCD started to display some weird flicker and finally gave out. Fortunately, it was still under warranty and I was able to send it in for repair. Flash forward to January 05. Same screen flicker started to occur except that I was now out of the warranty period. After looking into service pricing, I concluded that unless I could fix it myself it was better to just buy a new laptop rather than spending the money on fixing this one. So how to fix? Off to Google!

First stop was to the http://X1000Forums.Com site. There was a wealth of information on this particular laptop and there seemed to be a number of people who had problems with the LCD. Hmmmm. It turns out that the LCD was not the problem at all but, rather, the flex cable that connects the LCD, power inverter and video card. It seems that this is a very flimsy cable and was the cause of my problem. That should be easy to fix, just order the cable from Compaq, open and replace. Wow! I just turned a $1200 problem into a $30 one. Well, not as simple as I thought....

While the flex cable has a specific part number, HP/Compaq will not sell it separately. In order to fix a $30 problem, you must buy a $1000 LCD panel that includes the cable.

Again, HP/Compaq is making you pay $1000 to fix a $30 problem!?!

It was my understanding, after speaking to a parts supplier, that they used to sell the cable separately but stopped. I guess they figured they could make more money ripping off consumers who don't know better. I mean someone had to pay Carly's $42M exit package right? As much as I like the performance and form of this laptop, I could never recommend one to a friend due to this kind of practice.

Back to the problem. eBay is a do-it-yourselfer's heaven. Found a company that sells spare parts and picked up the cable for $55 plus shipping. Cable arrived and everything worked great! So , I'm sitting there and looking at this pile of parts, ready to reassemble the laptop and I stopped. A mess of gray and black. How unoriginal! Now that I have it apart, why not personalize it a bit? Off to the web again!

For anyone looking to do system/case mods, the place you need to go is Yoshi's Forums. Yoshi used to be a regular on TechTV's (now G4TV) The Screen Savers, which was one of the best shows on the whole network, and he was the modding expert. You needed to know how to water cut a side panel? Yoshi's your man! Any way, his forums will teach you almost any case mod you need. Being a laptop, my options were limited and I figures the best route was to paint it. That's right, paint!

Below are some pictures of the laptop in process and the final result! Check them out:

Nice lines, clean looking but BOORRINNGGG!

Oh look, the screen opens and more grey!

Base apart and just itching to be modified!

Nice bright yellow enamel! Early painting and required 5 coats to get the finish I needed.

STYLISH! Should have worn a mask as well (yellow spray paint up the nose is.....interesting).

Painted, drying and waiting to be reassembled!

Oh look! FAST yellow laptop running JDS!

Another angle.

Now for the BACK!

So, being a gamer, I wanted the mod to have a game theme to it as well. I reconstructed the classic Space Invaders characters in PaintShop Pro, did a bit of texturing and chiseling and printed the final characters out on very thick photo paper. Then using a hobby knife and straight edge, cut them out and spray glued them to the back. 6 coats of clear enamel later, to seal them in and we're done!

A close up. SHINY!

And there you go, modded laptop! Not as difficult as one might think and adds a bit of flavor to the plain old laptop. Got any mods to share with us? Post below!

Hey, nice job... Though I'm wondering about the omitted step where you covered up the recess on the LCD backplane where the Compaq badge previously resided.

That's probably the purpose of the middle space invader.

Kicks ass!! Really impressive. Great idea the space invaders characters.

Hi My HP laptop exhibited the same problem, so I stripped out the cable and repaired the wire that was in the bundle that goes to the LCD panel. Cost £0.

I have the same problem! It seems that http://x1000forums.com/ doesn't work anymore does anybody know in which other website the talk about this issue?

since you took one of these apart, where's the second RAM memory bank located? I changed on under noted pastic panel on bottom of notebook, but not sure where to look for second one?

It's under the keyboard. Remove the two marked screws (with little keyboard pic) on the bottom of the laptop and then slide the four clips down on top of the key board (between esc and f1; f4 and f5; f8 and f9; and lastly f12 and del) and then lift the top of the keyboard.

I had exactly the same problem last year and had it fixed under warranty, but do you know if anybody has had this problem? The original hard drive kept suffering from "Non-system disk or disk error problems" and after a couple of restarts would boot-up. It became worse and worse, that I eventually bought a new hard drive. I've had this drive in for 2 months or so...and everything was running fine, but in these last two weeks, the problem has started again...I haven't mis-handled or bashed about my laptop, so I can't explain this problem? Help? Is it a lose wire or something else or what?

Google cache has backups of x1000forums.com. try here: http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:CmSoAak7QvAJ:www.x1000forums.com/index.php%3Fshowtopic%3D863+site:+www.x1000forums.com+opening&hl=en Hard driver error is usually due to the hd connector springs on the laptop not making full contact. I resolved this by ever so slightly bending the spring contacts outwards. Be very careful not to snap them or you're hooped. Good luck

I have the same problem and went on eBay but can't find the flex cable that connects the LCD, power inverter to the video card. Help!! I'm a photographer and my entire portfolio is on this machine.

Posted by Shawn on August 08, 2005 at 02:42 PM EDT #

@Shawn. If you are really desparate, you can actually load up your harddrive on someone else's computer. You have two options: 1) Take the hd out and put it into someone else's laptop. 2) But an external USB harddrive holder. I think they have these at newegg.com You connect your hd to the thing and it plugs into any laptop through USB as an external drive. Hope that helps. kev

it's really nice to know there are a few who have same problem... Now I know my flex cable is problem... Does anyone know where I can get it? I can't find it at ebay... And anyone will let me know the steps that I should follow to disassemble my notebook?

i'll post up some pics of the same mod i've done. same process, only different thing is that i've painted it black, put the old school "1 up" from the mario nes on it, and layed down layer upon layer of krylon clear coat for the finish. it's drying right now, but i'll get the 2000 wetsandpaper out and then buff it up real nice.

Posted by carlo on January 09, 2007 at 11:19 PM EST #

ok as i said i'd be doing the same mod. the clear coat is dry, and i will buff it soon. i thought i'd make some links to the pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture33.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture32.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture31.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture30.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture24.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/rooj0103/Picture23.jpg

that's it. a PAINTED COMPAQ X1000. hope this can help someone else who is adventurous enough to do this. took me 3 days to disassemble, applying bondo, sanding, primer, sanding, coats of paint and sanding and finally clear coat and more sanding and a final coat.

Hey, Thanks to this blog I have replaced my keyboard in10 minutes. I could not figure out how to get at it. I took out every screw and still could not get at it until I read this blog. I have had a very similiar problem with my X1000 but it was with my keyboard. My keys would get stuck to the point of uslessness. I sent it back to Compaq/HP and they replaced the keyboard (it was under warranty). Now after the next 12 months my keys were sticky but now the space key did not work at all anymore. HP told me that it would cost about $270.00 US to fix it and I would be without my laptop for 2 weeks!!!. I was appaulled, it seems that they replaced my keyboard with a used one or the same one the first time. I am not a likely hostage. I searched until I found a keyboard on eBay for $32.00 with shipping. My space bar now works good as new (it is new!). I just have to unlearn the cut and paste method I have taught myself to use to get a space key... I also now know where the second memory module is and can now change it. No one at the store where I purchased it three years ago knew where it was so I never changed the memory. Back to eBay for memory now... Thanks again...

I ran the utility to create "recovery discs" on my new laptop. It aborted. I registered and emailed tech support for a set of discs. I waited. I emailed again. I waited. Over 3 months, including two emails to the office of the CEO, Mark Hurd, this produced...NO EFFECTIVE COMPAQ SUPPORT!

My laptop is useless without recovery discs and I can't get normal support, escalated support, or support from the office of the CEO.

Will I ever recommend or buy Compaq or HP again? Not in THIS lifetime.
