So, first a shout out to the boys over at Penny Arcade, especially Tycho, for blogging about Puzzle Quest. Damn them. Thanks to his post about how the game has "gripped" the Penny Arcade office, I decided to go out and pick up this gem. This game now owns my soul....

Puzzle Quest for the Nintendo DS is an RPG driven story set in the typical knights and orcs environment, but all of the "battles" are performed through competitive puzzles. To be more specific, it is a Bejewled "match three" game with spells and strategy thrown in for good mix. You can build structures where you can research new spells and weapons, train mounts and siege cities. All of these activities are played as variants on the match three game mechanic.

The problem is that Bejewled is ridiculously addictive. A fantastic game of strategy and a bit of luck, it has gameplay that forces the brain into the "Just ONE more...." trap that slows the passing of time for the player, while blowing 2 hours in that 10 minute vortex. I don't believe I have been to bed before 1:00am since I purchased this game.

So thanks a LOT Tycho.....and I will have my DS at PAX. You have been warned... :)

Comments:

Yeah, too addictive! I read the Penny Arcade thing and got hooked too. Just shows you the power of what a free games demo can do for you game. My friend went to pick up right after he played it for a few hours. I've yet to pick it up because I'm afraid of what it will do with my free time.

I have gotten the PSP version last night and man I am dog tired at work today. This game has a ton of hours you can sink into it. Just the story line itself has a good amount of new gameplay, but you can just do hours of "bejeweled" style battling too.

It's an awesomely addicting game. My bf hasn't played it once since I snatched his DS and stole it. :D But I have a question. I've learned new spells and stuff, but they aren't showing up on my battle screens. How do I get them active for battle? Sorry if this is n00bish. And yes, I did actually go through everything to Learn them. But where are they?

Kate, you need to access the item screen and one of the icons on the menu bar will allow you to add them to your spell list. Can't remember right now how to get in there, but it is in the manual :) Great that you are enjoying the game so much! I'm 29th level now, but slowing down a bit since we got Super Paper Mario for the Wii at home :) SPM FTW!

Sailor needs to bring a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage across the river.
The boat is tiny and can only carry one passenger at a time.
If he leaves the wolf and the goat alone together, the wolf will eat the goat.
If he leaves the goat and the cabbage alone together, the goat will eat the cabbage.

3. Please help this family to cross to the other side of the bridge. Notice that: It is night time. There is only 1 lamp. A maximum of two persons can cross the bridge at one time and they must have the lamp with them.
Each person walks at a different speed: 1 sec, 3 sec, 6 sec, 8 sec, 12 sec respectively. A pair must walk together at the speed of the slower person. The lamp only has enough energy for 30 sec!

How to play: At the top of the screen you'll see members of the family. Select two at a time. Then click GO! When two of them cross the bridge - select one of them to go back and bring the lamp to others and click GO. Then pick another pair to cross
