Pandora holiday music

I've been using and enjoying Pandora for several weeks now. I've got way too many stations already.

Yesterday I started listening to some of Pandora's holiday stations, in particular Vince Guaraldi Trio (Holiday). If you're familiar with the Peanuts holiday TV specials, you've heard Vince Guaraldi's music. I think all of the specials use Linus and Lucy as their theme song.

One nice thing is that most of the other songs on the station are jazz, and I enjoy that, having played bass in jazz bands for many years in the past, and having played my share of holiday songs along the way.

Andrea Echeverri - Andrea Echeverri

I heard A Eme O from this album on Horizontes a number of times, and heard a guest appearance on the program by Andrea and her band during SXSW, and I finally picked up a copy last weekend. Excellent CD, I'm really enjoying it. I don't understand Spanish at all, except for a few words like "amor", but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. Same goes with listening to Brazilian music. So I'm listening to the music and tone of the voices rather than the words.

Eklektikos

Eklektikos is another great music program on the local NPR station, KUT. This program really goes both wide into different genres and deep within many of those genres. There are guests a few times every week, generally musical guests but occasionally authors too. The show is on from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central time weekdays on 90.5 FM in the Austin area and over the Internet.

Horizontes on KUT

One of the great music programs on radio that I've discovered since living in Austin (since 1994) is Horizontes, which explores the music of Latin America. This two hour program is on from 1-3 p.m. Central time on KUT, which is at 90.5 FM and also can be heard over the Internet. The first hour concentrates mainly on Brazilian music, and the second explores the rest of Latin America. There are occasional forays to other places like Portugal too. I've heard some great music on Horizontes, and I encourage you to give it a listen.

Cool world music site with free singles

I recently ran across Calabash Music, which is a fair trade world music web site. One cool thing they have is an MP3 blog where they offer free singles twice a week. I've gotten a couple so far, interesting stuff.

'Tis the season

We had our annual holiday celebration here at Sun Austin today, and we also had a talent show as part of it. We had a number of musical acts and a juggler, and of course loads of food.

For the talent show, a couple of coworkers asked me to play bass, and I agreed. We played four songs. Our friend Robert took some pictures, which I thought I'd share here for posterity or infamy, depending on your point of view!

Here's Don, our resident Elvis impersonator, who played guitar and sang: Don

Here's Tim, who also played guitar and sang: Tim

And here's Ronnie Van Zandt back from the dead with me on bass in the background: Ronnie and Dave

We had a good time and the talent show was a big success, and I hope it returns next year!

A down note for music in Burnsville

My brother Tom is quoted in this article. I know my brother and sister-in-law have been working pretty hard to convince their local school board that music education is important. I agree, I'm a musician and got a good start in elementary, junior high and high school orchestras and bands.

Toni Price Hey

This CD is kind of old, and for some reason, the Border's Books here in NW Austin hasn't been carrying it. I finally saw it there on Saturday and grabbed it. Wow, great tunes. Misty Moonlight, Tumbleweed and Too Much Coffee are the three I probably like the best. I used to be in a band where we played Misty Moonlight so it brings back some memories. One of these days I need to get down to the Continental Club for Toni's Hippie Happy Hour.

Car CD: Bebel Gilberto Bebel Gilberto

I haven't quite played all of this yet (guess my commute isn't all that long :->) but it seems to me that Bebel's sophomore effort is just as good as her first. I've really grown to like bossa nova over the years, and other Brazilian music. Somewhere along the line I discovered Antonio Carlos Jobim, after having played his songs in big bands for years. Took me a while to get the connection. Bebel is the daughter of João Gilberto, so she's certainly got the heritage for bossa nova.

Current tunes: Victor Wooten "Yin Yang"

I've owned this one for a while, but haven't given it a good listen. I'm a bass player, so I like to buy solo albums by bass players when I hear about them. I've enjoyed Victor's work in Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, but in general his solo stuff doesn't do as much for me.
