Rode to work today
Tuesday Mar 07, 2006
Now that marathon training is over, I can fit in riding my bike to work. I did. It was about 13 miles in, which I covered in about 57 minutes. Nice ride. The only really busy road I'm on is Parmer Lane, which is a little hairy. But I minimize my time on that road, and stick to side streets when I can.
I got my bike last year. It's a 2005 Giant FCR 4. Giant calls this a "fitness" bike, and classifies it with their road bikes. It's tires aren't quite as skinny as other road bikes, but quite a bit thinner than a hybrid or mountain bike. It also has straight handlebars rather than drop bars. But the gearing is pretty close to other road bikes. At any rate, I think it was a good buy. When I decided I wanted to replace my mid-1980s vintage mountain bike (well, I haven't gotten rid of the mountain bike yet) I decided I wanted a road bike. But I had serious sticker shock! The industry has moved towards mountain and hybrid bikes, so those can be had pretty inexpensively. But road bikes are another matter. I decided Giant offered pretty good prices for someone who was just getting back into road riding. I also decided I liked the more upright riding style of a mountain or hybrid bike. So the FCR 4 seemed like a good choice.
