Five signs you are a twitter addict

As twitter reaches the 19 million user mark and is the talk of the town from Oprah to the NYT, I'm willing to admit that I have a problem and perhaps you do too. Techcrunch recently estimated that with these growth rates, twitter will have 50 million users by the summer. As a twitterholic, my patterns are hard to ignore. Are you suffering from at least four of the following? Any others?

1. You check your twitter feed in bed before u kiss the honey good morning

2. You start introducing all your friends as @Tom, @Jerry, despite them not having twitter accounts

3. You hold frequent one way conversations with twitter celebrities even though they never respond

4. You refer to everyone you follow and never met as your "friend", including Oprah

5. All your bathroom visits are coupled with twitter updates

Tips for new grads in tough times

The helpful folks over at LinkedIn are running a special feature for new grads and students seeking work in this challenging market. It is called Seek Week and they are providing tools so students can learn how to connect and grow their professional network. This is how you land cool gigs! Using their networking services is invaluable right now and as a case study they ran a guest blog post about me, and how I landed here at Sun.

Great Video on Twitter - "SuperNews: Twouble with Twitters"

I found this very funny!

As Twitter seams to have hit the tipping point, it will be interesting to see what features/changes are needed in order to stay focused on the original idea of "What are you doing?" Has twitter become just another source of news and information overload? Will services like Brightkite, Foursquare and others provide more value for the small groups of people interested in interaction at a local and more regional focused level?

Cloud Sun Computing and the future of privacy

I just spent some time listening to a very interesting interview of Michelle Dennedy, Chief Governance Officer for our new Cloud initiative.  Privacy, cloud risks, compliance, content ownership and the future of computing are discussed among other hot topics. Obviously, we don't know everything but we know what we don't know! One thing is for sure, Sun is leading the way and potentially creating a consortium of big players to align and tackle some of these big questions. The cloud is the future my friends, mark our words!

Look out for more announcements at our upcoming CommunityOne East conference on March 18th, 2009 -- in my lovely hometown Nueva York baby.

Pretty archaic audio player but the link below should work to David Berlind's Tech Radar podcast: Cloud Podcast

If Facebook were a country, it would be Brazil!

The Today Show had our favorite social media 23rd year old live this morning. Good chat on the terms of service and privacy controversy. FB pulled back their announcement and now they are asking for participation from their users regarding new policies. Kudos for their transparency and quick reaction.

Enjoy!

Our growing collaborative ecosystem

I listened to a great lunch talk yesterday today given by accomplished entrepreneur Philippe Courtot and what I picked up is this:

1. The internet has not served as a way for computers to talk to one another, but as a way for people
to cooperate, communicate and share everything with one another. In
essence, the technology that will prove the most useful will help
people collaborate easier and more efficiently than ever before.

2. Traditional software as we know it will go the way of the dinosaur, as software as
a service (SaaS) trends builds momentum and the masses adopt web based
tools for most work processes.

3. Business models that still served us even as recently as 2-3 years ago will become
completely irrelevant at an alarming clip. In essence, I have to dump
all the MBA texts that have broken my piggy bank this past year.

This insight reminded of of this comprehensive illustration of the extensive social media community and tools that are changing our lives. What will this prism look like in 1, 2, 5...years?

Sophomoric humor at its best

Rumor has it that video site College Humor has been getting a lot of attention at the recent Web 2.0 expo in NYC. While the founders (two High School friends)  have been at it since 1999, when they started sharing videos with each other in college, they claim that now they have grown to be the #1 comedy site on the internet. While some of the videos certainly focus on adolescent material, they have high production value and I promise that they will at least earn a few chuckles. Check out  Professor Wikipedia and Font Conference.

I also think this '24' spoof with great old skool internet technology is great.

Conference update

The first session at Techcrunch50 this morning was on Youth & Entertainment and the startups that presented were Shryk, Hangout Industries, BlahGirls and Tweegee. The place was packed with the who's who of the tech celebs with of course Michael Arrington, Google's Marissa Mayer, Digg's Kevin Rose and Seesmic's  Loic Le Meur to name a few. The early demonstrations were mediocre, either lacking in viable business models or relying on celebrity pull for attention (BlahGirls). The startup that impressed me the most was Hangout Industries due to their seamless product placement and compelling user interface that stood out from the pack. The judges surprisingly seemed more than tickled with Ashton Kutcher's demonstration which to me lacked poise, consisted of bad bathroom humor and went almost two minutes past the time limit. Tonight I check out the Myspace party, email me for a full report on the open bar, DJ Sam Ronson and perhaps Lindsay Lohan sightings.

TechCrunch 50

I'm headed to TechCrunch50 this week to witness 50 new companies launch to the public. Perhaps the Facebook and Google's of tomorrow, and if not Ashton Kutcher's new venture will be unveiled by the cute man himself. I'm especially excited about the Hollywood Goes Silicon Valley panel with my fave writer/director Joss Whedon of 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' fame.

It's like my favorite show ever.. Check back for updates!

Digital string around the finger by Joyce Solano

Kwiry is a new SF based startup providing a service in which users can text reminders to themselves. At first, this seemed useless to me because I can use my iCal or notes feature on my iPhone. However, I know plenty of people that have very basic phones with not much function outside of SMS and dialing. The way Kwiry works is simple. If your walking past the record store and want a reminder to download that infectious M.I.A song, you text it to 59479 (k-w-i-r-y) and have links to search results automatically delivered to your email, RSS, favorite web startpage and kwiry's website.

Their platform has seen continuous upgrades and now can be integrated with calendars such as Outlook, iCal, and Google Calendar. You can also use your voice and call to text using Jott, for those inappropriate texting moments. In addition, today Kwiry has announced some cool new shortcuts:

  • Netflix: Users send a message with "netflix" followed by the name of a movie to kwiry (e.g. netflix mystic river) and the movie will be added to their Netflix queue.
  • Amazon: Similarly, users can text "amazon" followed by the name of a product (e.g. amazon jawbone headset) to add it to their Amazon Wish List.
  • Calendar tasks: Users can also add an appointment to their calendar via text message using the shortcut word "task” (e.g. task buy anniversary gift 8-25).
  • List: Users can send in multiple kwirys in one text message with the "list" shortcut (e.g. list alicia keys, www.chucknorrisfacts.com, get dry cleaning).
What do you guys think? Useful or overkill?

Getting Loopt by Joyce Solano

I wanted to tell you guys about my most recent obsession... social mapping!  Loopt is a popular app that makes it super easy to upload your location, pics and be able to ping your friends for their whereabouts from your mobile. This weekend it proved to a be a great tool for locating friends after the SF Giants ballgame and erase the loss with a couple of more beers together.

Yes, I LOVE to see the little pins across the city that represent my friends on the go. So easy to find each other, have your peeps be in on your routine, lunch spots and bar excursions. Perhaps this is not for the loners out there, but for those of us who love to be found, Loopt is just plain awesome!

All that twitters IS gold..by Joyce Solano

I cannot believe how much my love for Twitter has grown. I am not so great at sharing long details. I like it to the point. Shot from the hip. NYC style all the way. So for me, updates about my fave peeps' lives in quick, fragmented sentences throughout the day is heavenly. Besides, I'm much more intrigued by a mundane fact (i just spilled my coffee all over my lap) than a long involved narrative aka.. short attention span.

However, it was widely noted in the blogosphere that Twitter's consistent outages would surely doom them into the web 2.0 grave, creating the perfect window of opportunity for Twitter-like competitors Jaiku or Plurk.

When Twitter service is down you see Yiying Lu's illustration of the "Fail Whale" being lifted out of the water by eight lil tweetering birdies. This image is so common in fact that it has become a popular t-shirt. Kinda awesome that their screen of doom, instead of sinking them, has become a hipster fashion garment. The Twitter fans continue to grow and we are patient with the crew and hope they will get it together. Their honesty and community facilitates this attitude among users. This is how I feel about zapppos. When they mess up, they are sooooo nice and offer such great easy service, that ya kinda can't help love 'em for it.
