Understanding Schema in OpenDS

It's been quite a while since my last post. It's very easy to get out of the habit, especially when there's so much else going on. But we're making lots of progress on OpenDS, and we're getting ready to start delving into some very interesting areas. We've recently had lots of good in-depth discussions about features like synchronization and proxy/virtual/distribution capabilities, we're also making headway in areas like schema management, configuration management, and access control, and we're hoping to have a project roadmap published in the near future.

This morning, I gave an internal presentation about LDAP schema in general, with emphasis on how it's treated in OpenDS. OpenDS is heavily dependent upon schema for correct operation, and also provides more obscure features like name forms, DIT content rules, and DIT structure rules that aren't as widely supported in other directories. The content of this presentation is available online at https://opends.dev.java.net/public/docs/architecture/schema-design/index.html along with the rest of the OpenDS documentation that's currently available.

Other new documentation that has been added fairly recently includes an Introduction to OpenDS Development and a description of how to write a simple OpenDS plugin. We do hope to have more advanced plugin documentation in the near future once we get a more complete configuration framework in place, and we'll be getting some doc writers in the very near future, so hopefully we'll be able to provide even more information and keep it up to date as things change.
