On 15 September, Oracle and Sun announced the Exadata Version 2 solution. Exadata Version 2 is a complete solution designed to dramatically speed up Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Data Warehousing (DW), and mixed database workloads. Based on a combination of Oracle software and innovative Sun hardware, the system is built upon a massively parallel architecture that incorporates fast servers, breakthrough flash technology, and high-bandwidth interconnects between storage and database servers — a design that radically accelerates database processing and delivers exceptional performance.

You may not be aware that there are four optimized Oracle solutions available from Sun/Oracle. These are:
  • Exadata Version 2
    • Designed and Tuned for Oracle, the DB Machine provides key hardware and software benefits.
      • Sun provides the hardware with:
        • 50% Faster CPUs - Intel Xeon 5500 Series (Nehalem) processors
        • 50% Faster Disks - 600 GB SAS Disks at 6 Gigabits/second
        • 300% Faster Memory - DDR3 memory
        • 125% More Memory - 72 Gigabytes per Database Server
        • 100% Faster Network - 40 Gigabits/second InfiniBand
        • Raw disk capacity of 100 TB per Exadata V2
        • Exadata Smart Flash Cache for transaction processing and mixed workloads
      • Oracle brings the software:
        • Features the latest generation of innovation - Oracle Database 11g Release 2
        • Hybrid columnar compression for 10-50 times greater data compression
        • Scans on compressed data for even faster query execution
        • Storage Indexes to further reduce disk I/Os
        • Offloading of query processing to storage using Smart Scans
        • Smart scan of Data Mining models in storage servers
  • Sun Optimized Oracle CRM Solution
    • Unmatched Power and Space Efficiencies
      • Up to 14K Siebel users on one T5440 (2x closest competitor)
      • Advanced virtualization and consolidation capabilities
    • Benefits of Upgrading to T5440
      • H/W operating cost savings of $1M-5M within 5 years
      • 700-1900% ROI

    • Benefits of upgrading to Siebel 8
      • TCO savings up to 51%
      • Maintenance cost reductions of up to 50%
      • Deployment cost reductions up to 75%
      • Easy-to-use Siebel 8 rules engine empowers CRM users
      • Closed-loop analytics and CRM tools help companies build customer loyalty
  • Oracle Optimized Warehouse Solution
    • For the Customer
      • OWI configuration help customers decrease implementation costs for datawarehousing needs.
      • Quickly implement and deliver well balanced, high performance, low cost, real-time DW systems to create a competitive advantage.
      • Pre-tested, validated configurations provide predictable performance.
      • Building block configurations enable easy scalability.
      • Quickly determine workload and number of users supported by a configuration.
      • High Performance Data Warehouse
      • Fast and simple to implement - reduces risk
      • Exceptional, predictable performance
      • Easy to maintain
      • Competitively prices
    • Addressing Customer Business Challenges
      • Containing cost and managing risk
      • Increasing transaction volumes, shrinking margins
      • Security and authentication demands
      • Regulation, compliance, and governance
      • Mergers and acquisitions activity picking up again in many industries
      • Adoption of new open and industry standards
      • Many customers end up with poorly configured data warehouses with slow response times
  • Enterprise Grid Solutions from Sun and Oracle
    • Sun's comprehensive portfolio of SPARC 64, SPARC T2 Plus and x64 based servers provides customers with choice and flexibility to use the optimum architecture for their specific needs.
    • Solaris is the most advanced operating system on the planet with unmatched scalability, reliability and security while also giving customer choice and freedom with its open source foundations. Simultaneously, for customers who have standardized on the Windows or Linux OS, the Sun x64 platforms deliver extreme performance at competitive cost structures.
    • Oracle Clusterware runs as an application, which can be starved for resources the same as any other process. Solaris Cluster runs in the kernel at a high priority and closely monitors cluster membership.
