Alan, Talented employees are welcome everywhere! I am sure that all involved are aware there are 'HR' methods to acquistion of talent for a corporation. Public corporations, as SUN, are held to very high standards of operation. Ask Mr.McNealy! Our 'letigious society', which has not assisted those 14,500 individuals departing HP, will quickly SUN 'bash' given ANY opportunity presented. Rest assured GP has the best of intentions for these folks, be wary of giving IT ?pundits? new fodder!

I have always been a fan of Sun since I was in high school and working with my first Sun Ultra 30 system. I did my first high end development on that box. Even though I do development in the Microsoft way of the world these days for enjoyable company to work with I still find it amusing that most of my Java applications will compile with a few source code changes in C#. The development world maybe changing but even a lowly programmer like me still appreciates the effect Sun has the on rest of the development community.

Sun's CTO writes in his blog how HP degenerated from an innovation first company to the state it is in now. I am dismayed by the planned cuts and the news regarding "cutting fat". Cnet's news.com reported HP's layoff came after some fattening that happened since 2002. Cnet says HP's official reported that the company is "focused on the future". I don't see HP has the will to succeed and it is manifested not just by their layoffs but in any of the product development and product marketing. Lack of courage and will at the upper management leads to unnecessary fattening up then a subsequent layoff to cut costs. So one CEO takes credit for growing the company and the next comes in slashes jobs and takes credit for cutting costs. There a few proponents who justify the high salaries and perks that go to a CEO but I see no blame that goes to a CEO for a layoff. I see in this layoff HP's upper management's gross failure. What has HP done lately that can be called innovative? remarkable? bold? When was the last time they took things to the edges? The stagnation in stock price is not entirely due to the bloat, it is because of the said laxity. I will point you to my recent article on how uninteresting products HP makes .

Evidence of technological innovation winning over profit chasing and bottom line obsessive behavior is evident in all the success stories of big Silicon Valley tech companies who survived the bubble and stayed true to what the valley has always been about.

Google, Yahoo, Apple and IBM are all companies who stay on top of the technological ball and believe that if you build it, people will come. They don't worry about market trends, competiion and business strategy. They innovate, create and let the market follow thier lead.

I commend Sun for doing exactly that with Solaris 10, DTrace and all the other fantastic developer oriented technologies they have innovated over the last 3 years.
