Frank Loehmann

Project Renaissance Logo

Thinning out process for the existing OOo user interface has started. Focus for OOo 3.3 will be on Impress. Please find the October status update presentation for Project Renaissance at the OOo Wiki (1 MB).

Feedback welcome.

Best regards,

Project Renaissance Team

Why perseverate? Users don't want Renaissance-Ribbon

instead to ribbonize, go to solve bugs open from year and year

It's great, that work on the new interface continues, because the one currently utilized seems to be used for about 10 years. There are a lot of messages, that the current OpenOffice.org interface is just a bad copy of Microsoft Office 97 interface, which is refusing other less visible for newbies benefits from the OpenOffice.org.
I'm sure also, that people involved in this project are interested (and may be able) to work only on interface project, and saying, that renaissance is bad and should be canceled will not improve situation in other projects, however it would free some money to solve other a bit more painful, but not so visible for the new users problems.
I don't like, what I saw in the prototype version of the Impress interface, both visually and from usability point o view, but, of course, it's just a prototype and many things, hopefully, even principle of disposition of the interface elements can be changed in final version. My recommendation is to keep default prototype as simple as possible with option to follow to the current renaissance direction, as well as to make Impression more professional (easily accessible keyboard shortcuts, more working space instead of buttons). IBM version of "renaissance" is much more acceptable for me.

I'm sure, that project should continue and good luck in your work! (But, please, don't forget about people actually working with OpenOffice.org...)

Hi everyone!

@ Andis: Thank you for your both encouraging words and critical words. We won't forget about the current users. To be honest, I'm one of them and I love the power of OOo :-)

@ The Wizard of Oz: You're back ;-) Since you are interested in open issues, I'm sure that you are happy to hear that one of the next steps is to address usability issues (some of them several years old). The presentation above mentions improvements for OOo 3.3 - the issues are currently discussed with the Impress team. Initially, Frank posted some of them and requested some more input on the list ux-discuss. The initial ideas are shown here: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Renaissance:Analyze

Bye,
Christoph

that's what the 686 users who signed the petition against OOo Ribbonization want.
