Sun's ODF Plug-In for Microsoft Office, and the OpenOffice.org Toolkit Project
Malte Timmermann

I am sure you already have seen the announcement of our new ODF Plug-In for Microsoft Office.

So for the people who are interested in our new ODF Toolkit Project:

Of course this Plug-in, which uses StarOffice/OpenOffice.org as a conversion engine, shares an important requirement with the ODF Toolkit – Size.

People don't want to install a 300MB Office suite just for doing some document conversion.

Same thing holds true for people who want to do some tasks with an ODF Toolkit.

So for the Plug-In we already did a lot of work in shrinking an OpenOffice.org installation, leave away all of the extras, and also some code.

I plan to make a first version of (something like) an ODF Toolkit available as an installation set, which can be build in the instsetoo_native module. This will install the tiny version of OpenOffice.org.

People can start using that as an ODF toolkit, and help in analyzing how to shrink that even more.

Beside shrinking by removing not needed libraries, next steps are to refactor/reorganize OOo code. The goal is that you can have for example Writer core functionality, without the need to have UI code in your toolkit installation.

So stay tuned and don't forget to subscribe to dev@odftoolkit.openoffice.org
