IDC has produced a "multimedia white paper" on the need to address complexity in HPC.
"The proliferation of HPC-based modeling and simulation within government, academia, and industry propelled technical server revenue past $10 billion in 2006 - en route to a projected $15.5 billioin in 2011. This rapid growth cannot be sustained in the long run, however, without addressing the skyrocketing complexity of HPC hardware and software systems." Multimedia White Paper

In the latest Sun Net Talk, Michael Schulman discusses the high performance computing challenges facing companies using MCAE. Numerical simulation of real-world problems has become standard practice among manufacturers worldwide, helping to reduce costs and meet short time-to-market windows. At the same time, simulation has helped improve product quality, optimize materials usage, and address increasingly stringent governmental safety and environmental regulations. Project Black Box is now a full-fledged shipping product with a new name: Sun Modular Datacenter (Sun MD). In this short introduction video, you'll learn how the Sun MD is packs a lot of punch into a small footprint.

At only 160 sq ft, each Sun MD hosts a 12.5kW rack for network and system management equipment and seven 25kW-capable racks for servers, storage, or other equipment. This is 4-times denser per rack than a typical datacenter and makes it an ideal platform for the new generations of blade servers and other high-density equipment that many existing datacenters are unable to support due to their limited power or cooling capabilities. The high power and cooling efficiency of the Sun MD make it possible to help reduce clutter and chaos in the datacenter by serving as the ultimate consolidation and virtualization platform.
