Moore’s Law hits physics in memory chips

Will the day soon come when memory chips can't be made any smaller?

"The end of Moore's law is expected to come sooner for memory chips than for processors, because the chips use pools of charged electrons to store data, and as the amount of electrons in the pool shrinks, data becomes harder to read. "It's a question we've had forever, and we've always had an answer," said Samsung's Tom Trill. "There's been a resurgence in terms of pessimism ... in the last few months." Potential alternatives include M-RAM, P-RAM, molecular memory, and carbon nanotubes." Full Story
