TACC Ranger Dedication Ceremony Today

Ranger, the most powerful supercomputing system in the world for open science research, today will be dedicated by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.

Sun supplied the hardware architecture for the machine, which is a cluster of many computers spread over more than 80 racks of computing space. Two Sun high-speed switches tie the whole thing together into a single computer that takes up about 4,500 square feet of floor space.

"The reason we won the deal is we offered more for the dollars than anybody else," said Andy Bechtolsheim, chief architect and senior vice president of Sun's systems group. "People are getting a really good deal in terms of the compute power for the investment." Full Story
