Java In Cognito

Pssst.  Over here.  In the coffee cup.  It's me, Java.  I'm hiding from the paparazzi.  Yes, I'm all over the news today.  I'm no stranger to fame. I've been all over the internet for years, on blogs on cell phones, smart cards and every other device.  I'm even on Mars.  I just needed a little break from all the publicity.  You can read all about the big announcements on every other Sun blog.  The world is celebrating that I am now available to the Open Source Community.  But did anyone ask ME how I feel about it?  And I'm not talking about Java ME, I'm talking about ME, Java!

It's not that I'm not grateful to Sun.  I know if it weren't for Sun, I wouldn't even be here.  Together, we changed the world.  I don't mean to be immodest, but I am HOT!  But still, did I really ask to be available to everyone? They've already seen my code. Must I give up all my privacy? I will have every developer knowing everything about me...putting their hands all over me, customizing me!  I'm feeling a little exposed.  And then there are all the tabloids talking about my many relationships.  How is Linux going to feel knowing of all my experience with so many devices?  I know I'm very compatible and relationships are easy for me, but sometimes I'm just happy to sit here alone in a coffee cup amongst the techno-phobes.

And what's up with that Duke fellow?  What IS he? Some kind of walking triangle?  And why is his nose so red?  Did anyone ever wonder about that? Sure, he's an enthusiastic fellow, but I need a break from him, too.  Just let me sit here quietly and relax amongst the artists.  Oh, here comes someone now.  He probably has never even heard of Java.  He's just looking at me like I'm an ordinary cup of coffee.  Ah...normalcy.  Wait....  Put down the cup!  You don't understand!!  I'm JAVA! You can't drink me!  The world depends on me!  Nooo....Noooo...  AAAGHHHH

Java,

feel free! Relax!

You know, what it means to be that exposed? You're now the most powerful being in the universe!

I did watch you grow, from all those Birds-of-a-Feather sessions at the 3rd WWW-conference in Darmstadt (1995 in my hometown! I was there, backstage, organizing, helping all the folks on stages to get their messages across the globe, because I worked for the organizing company in Darmstadt at that time... ;-) !) until today.

And don't be ashamed of Duke's red nose. You know, Rudolf, the red-nosed-reindeer, is so well-known, that every child is wishing to get in touch with him! So having a red-nosed friend will help tremendously in getting VERY popular!

So, be proud to be in the open! Cherish the luck! Feel proud! Enjoy the freedom!

I know, it takes time to get used to so little privacy, but, think about all the good things! You will make EVERYONE ashamed of not being open, out, and free!

So, welcome to the universe, Java, I like to see you grow up even more!

Yours Sincerly,
Matthias

Matthias, old friend, You can't imagine how good it is to hear from you. Of course, I remember you from the Darmstadt conference. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and advice. I was just feeling overwhelmed. It's scary to have so much power...to know that you are changing the world. But then I look around me and I see that I'm in good hands. And you're right. I need to lead by example. Yes, I do appreciate Duke, red nose and all. I was just feeling a little vulnerable and moody. I needed to get away. I learned my lesson, though. No more hiding in coffee cups. It was close, but I was too hot for that artist to even sip. I'm back where I belong now, and I know I'll be seeing you everywhere. Be sure and say 'hi' when you see me. And you know when I respond with a "Hello, World", I'll be thinking of you and all my other friends at Sun.

Dear Java, I'm very glad that you are well, my friend. Your last blogwords "AAAGHHHH", made me worrying about your life! Now that you're commenting again, I'm sure, you are in the best of health and will be for all the time. Enjoy yourself! (and beware of bypassing coffee junkies...)
