Today I'd like to talk about a very special guest we have here on Y-Blog: Heart. Heart is what truly sets Sun apart as a company. It's the biggest reason why people love to work here.
Heart lives in the employees at Sun. You find him in the respect with which they treat each other. You see him in the smiles and the fun that people have as they celebrate their successes and their passions. You see her in their determination and dedication as they work together to finish a big project. You see her in the compassion that is shown during hard times. (Just in case you're wondering if heart is male or female, he/she is both.)
How did Heart grow so much at Sun? I believe it started with our leaders. I have had personal visits from Heart that have impressed me beyond belief..literally. Once Scott McNealy called me at home when I was out on a Medical Leave of Absence. An employee of mine had emailed him, asking if he might call and wish me a speedy recovery, and he DID! When he called, I spent the first few minutes trying to find out who he REALLY was, telling him he was doing a fascinating impression of Scott. I found it hard to believe that the CEO would find time to make a "get well call" to an employee he'd never heard of. Another time, Scott personally delivered a congratulatory letter addressed to my son for his Eagle Scout ceremony. I had neglected to request the letter in time to get it through the mail for the ceremony. Scott, out for a Town Hall, couriered the letter to the Broomfield campus himself, telling the receptionist to be sure and get me that letter. In both of those instances, Heart was with Scott.
When you have a CEO that has Heart on his staff, the employees recognize he's a VIP...a Very Important Part...of what makes this company what it is. After all, he is the Heart of the company. He lives in all of us.
Heart, here on Yvette's Blog, inanimate objects have a chance to speak up and tell us how they feel about Sun. Do you have anything you'd like to share?
Yvette, first I'd like to recognize the people at Sun for giving me a chance to grow and thrive. It was a bold move to give me a position of such authority, sitting side-by-side with the CEO and executive staff. As I've visited the sites around the world, I've been honored to see myself reflected in the work ethic of this company.
Yvette, I don't think of myself as an "inanimate object". I have a voice through every employee that works here. Every "thank you" and "good work" is me talking. Every pat on the back, handshake or hug is me, reaching out. I am privileged to live within each of you and I appreciate the opportunity to be such a major part of this organization.
This is Thanksgiving Week here in the US, so I'm looking forward to spending time with family. It's a big week for me. Not as big as Valentine's Day, of course. But don't wait for Thanksgiving or Valentine's Day to invite me over. I'm available 24x7. (I'm part of the iLove program.) Thanks for making me part of your company and part of your life.
