There is a new blueprint solution available that shows Web 2.0 application deployment on Sun servers and the OpenSolaris operating system using MySQL. It shows how to scale a medium sized Web 2.0 site with a million registered users with open source technologies, and includes detailed configuration and tuning information for the deployment, along with tips for obtaining the best performance from such a configuration. The solution uses Olio—a Web 2.0 toolkit that Sun has invested in—to help customers analyze and scale deployments. Olio allows users to performance test new technologies in a stable environment without having to devise expensive, cumbersome tests on production applications.  You can get the blueprint by going to:

Today, at the MySQL Users Conference, Sun announced the release of MySQL 5.4.  MySQL 5.4 is the result of many months of work by Sun / MySQL engineers.  It delivers significant performance and scalability improvements to MySQL applications. A preview version of MySQL 5.4 is available now for download at http://www.mysql.com/5.4.

MySQL 5.4 Features & Benefits

A number of new enterprise features and compelling fixes are planned for MySQL 5.4, including:

  • Scalability improvements -- these fixes allow the InnoDB storage engine to scale up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers, more than doubling its previous capability;
  • Subquery optimizations -- improves the performance of analytic query operations, with some subqueries now executing in a fraction of the time compared to previous MySQL versions;
  • New query algorithms -- utilizes main memory to speed up the execution time of multi-way joins, especially for MySQL Cluster because the number of round-trips between the server and cluster nodes is minimized;
  • Improved stored procedures -- enables more robust error management through the implementation of the SIGNAL/RESIGNAL functions, so applications can more easily rely on stored procedures for business logic;
  • Improved prepared statements -- Output parameters will now be supported in prepared statements, which increases their functionality;
  • Improved Information Schema -- provides more metadata access to parameters and data return types that stored procedures use, which allows much more information to be made available for developers using connectors such as ODBC and JDBC;
  • Improved DTrace support -- improves diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities for MySQL on the Solaris(TM) Operating System.

 Stay tuned for formal benchmarks on MySQL 5.4.

Today, we released some new results for SPECjAppServer2004 that demonstrate Sun's leadership in price / performance.  Full details of the report can be found here.  The results we published achieved 2925.18 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard using an all open source stack from Sun -- Glassfish , MySQL and OpenSolaris (with ZFS), on the new Sun / Intel Nehalem based servers.

Back in November 2008, we released a SPECjAppServer 2004 number of 1197.50 SPECjAppServer2004JOPS@Standard.This latest result, of 2925.18 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard, is more than double that previous best.  In addition to pure performance improvements, this new results, which has a total cost of acquisition (HW + SW without support) of $38,880.00 (look here to see the full bill of materials) also has a lower price/performance than the previous result.    If you look at dollar / JOPS@Standard, the new result comes in at $13.29, while the result from November was $13.46 / JOPS@Standard.  If you include support, which factors in software costs, the dollar / JOPS@Standard is $26.95 (the full bill of materials can be found here).  In all aspects, Sun / MySQL are making strides to improve both price and performance of their stack.

Stay tuned as we will continue to demonstrate more leaps in this area.

 If you would like more specific details about this particular result, please check out Kevin and Tom's blogs.

Recently, Sun Microsystems and C-SAM announced a mobile banking solution built on MySQL and GlassFish. Details can be found here:

Tuesday Apr 14, 2009

Today, Sun is launching a new line of Intel Xeon 5500 systems. These impressive new systems feature:

  • Next-generation flash storage technology to eliminate I/O bottlenecks;
  • Integrated networking technologies to decrease cost and complexity; and a
  • Consistent management tool (Integrated Lights Out Manager, or "ILOM") to ease manageability across the servers and blades.
What all this means is that we can deliver up to 3x the performance of the previous processor generation, and, with the integration of Sun's SSD and Flash in Sun servers and blades, customers can enjoy 65x faster response times and 38% less power/GB. And, in keeping with our open approach, these new systems can seamlessly integrate into existing Solaris, Windows or Linux systems, and can easily be managed by existing third-party tools.

As part of this launch, ISV Engineering has done a variety of ISV / open source community proofpoints to showcase how well ISV applications run on these systems with Solaris / Open Solaris.  Full details of all of the activities can be found here.

One of the projects that was done was SugarCRM performance with MySQL 5.0.67 on Sun x4270 Server.  Check out all the performance details here.

Friday Apr 03, 2009

Recently, ISVe teamed up with MySQL Product Management to show that VMWare is a good environment to run MySQL in.   We jointly ran tests to show:

  • Provide a comparison of virtualized instances of MySQL Server instances running on VMware ESX with non-virtualized MySQL Server instances running on an equivalent hardware server.
  •  Provide “Best Practice” configuration guidance for running MySQL Server in a virtualized VMware environment.
Our tests showed that a virtualized environment adds only about 5% overhead (in TPS).  You can read the full whitepaper here.

Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 10:00am Pacific, Arun Gupta, will show how to leverage Netbeans IDE to quickly and easily develop and deploy MySQL and Glassfish backed applications using the JRuby-on-Rails framework. Combining JRuby-on-Rails with the MySQL database and Glassfish application server allows developers to deliver highly scalable and robust applications for the Web in a complete and integrated stack in less time, reducing development cycles and lowering your COGS.  You can register for the webinar here.

Yesterday, at the CommunityOne Event in New York, Zmanda's CEO showed how a MySQL database could be backed up to Sun's cloud using Zmanda ZRM via WebDAV API for integration.  Check out the video here.  If you're looking for an alternative to tape backups or a solution for backup archives, Sun's Cloud might be a good solution for you.  From the Zmanda team blog....In near future, our customers will be able to chose between Sun Cloud Storage or Amazon S3 as the destination of their backup archives.  You can read more about Sun's cloud here.
