As part of the MySQL on Sun hardware launch, Allan Packer put together 3 short technical videos on MySQL.
- Introduction to MySQL Architecture and Typical Deployments (approximately 8 minutes)
This video give an introduction to MySQL architecture including storage engines, a release status update, and typical deployment scenarios, which includes horizontal scaling via replication and shards. It also gives some advice on how to deploy MySQL on Sun systems today.
- Tuning and Monitoring MySQL (approximately 10 minutes)
This video highlights how to tune MySQL for optimal performance and includes details on which binaries are the right one, how to optimize data load and indexes, how to tune MySQL via my.cnf, which parameters are key for performance, as well as other tuning tips. It also gives some commentary on how MySQL can be monitored to determine performance.
- Future Directions for MySQL by Allan Packer (approximately 12 minutes)
This video addresses the future direction of performance and scalability for MySQL. Today, there are issues scaling MySQL up, and Sun has started a performance and scalability project to address these problems. The performance team, led by Allan Packer, is using Web 2.0 and transaction based workloads to simulate real customer environments and testing is being done on innodb, Maria, and soon to be Falcon. Not that this performance project is not for Solaris only. Linux performance improvement is a priority as well. In this video, Allan addresses the work that has been done so far, some of the issues that have been found, and where the team is going in the future.
