The 9th National OS Teaching Workshop and Academic Exchange Conference kicked off on July 28 in Yantai city, Shandong province. It attracted 110 OS professors from universities throughout China. In the 3-day conference, a dozen of professors shared their experience in OS curriculum development, student incubation and principle construction.

On the morning of July 29, Prof. Sun from Capital Normal University presented the experience of integrating OpenSolaris into OS course and constructing the Solaris Lab environment.




The single sponsor, Microsoft Research Asia has announced their share source project, Windows Research Kernel.


Immediately after the OS Teachers Conference, Sun China Engineering and Research Institute held the OpenSolaris Course Training in Yantai. 102 OS professors attended the 3-day training on OpenSolaris theory and labs.

During the opening ceremony on the morning July 31, we invited distinguished guests including Prof. Shi Meilin, Xiang Yong from Tsinghua University, Prof. Chen Xiangqun from Peking University, Prof. Sun Weizhen from Capital Normal University, Prof. Ren Manjie, Vice Dean of Yantai University and Ms. Wen Lifen, Chief Editor of Electronic Industry Publisher to share their experience in teaching or promoting OpenSolaris.


That afternoon, professors were divided into two classes based on the familiarity level of OpenSolaris. One group is instructed by Prof. Chen and Prof. Liu.




The other is supervised by Prof. Sun and Alex Peng.




At the evening of July 31, over 60 professors attended the panel discussion of integrating OpenSolaris into OS Course. I gave a half hour presentation on the Solaris Teaching Assistance program.


In the following two hours, professors exchanged ideas and input comments. Lots of questions and ideas arouse during this panel discussion.


    On the morning of August 2, professors has sit for the paper and lab examinations. We are planning to review the examinations and report the scores. For those who passed the examinations, we will offer them the training completion certificate.

    It's the first time for us to organize such a large scale of course training. Thanks everyone who makes this happen.

From May 24 to June 15, we have held OpenSolaris programming contest roadshow in 19 China universities of 11 cities. Totally we have introduced Solaris 10/OpenSolaris and Sun Studio 12 to over 2,500 students. Besides engaging students into the programming contest, we have got endorsement from the computer science or software schools of these universities. As a result, 19 representative (school leaders like Vice Dean, Secretary or famous professors) gave the welcome address to the contest roadshow and express their strong interests in the open source technology promotion and encourage their students to register the OpenSolaris programming contest. Besides, we have invited the OS professors who attended our Solaris Course Training as the coach of registrant team. Please stay tuned to the status of the contest.

At the beginning of the event, The university representative gave the welcome speech.  During the two-hour event, we have introduced the programming contest, Solaris 10/OpenSolaris new features and demonstrate DTrace, Sun Studio 12 for Solaris programming. The agenda of the roadshow was as following:

  3. Innovate with Solaris and Sun Studio 12
  4. OpenSolaris programming contest and Campus Ambassador program

During the event, gifts (Solaris Books, T-shirt, Duke) were presented to students who gave right answers to our quizzes. Every attendee has received a set of OpenSolaris Starter Kit, a leaflet and a fan (printed with OpenSolaris contest introduction).
