During last weekends in Xian (Oct. 21 - 22), 40 university Operating System/Unix Programming/C Programming teachers were trained with the latest Solaris/OpenSolaris technology and the Sun Studio IDE. 4 China professors delivered tutoring on Solaris Courses Plugin for OS and Solaris System Programming. We have installed 50 Solaris machines so that all teachers finished the labs on his individual machine installed with Solairs 10 Update 2 and Sun Studio 11.

Below is the agenda for this training:

All the teachers received the following materials / gifts during the training:
  • OpenSolaris Starter Kit DVD (localized version)
  • Solaris 10 Update 2 SAID DVD for x86/x64
  • Solaris 10 Red Bible (published by Publishing House of Electronics Industry)
  • Solaris System Programming (localized version, published by Publishing House of Machinery Industry)

  • A T-Shirt
During the Panel Discussion in the afternoon of Day 2, we gave introduction to the following topics:
  • Sun Academic Initiative
  • Special Discount on SCSA for College Students
  • Special Initiative to Promote Solaris/OpenSolaris in University OS Classes
  • Special Initiative to Promote Sun Studio in University Unix/C Programming Classes
The teachers were very interested in these programs. They all believed that these will help them a lot in their actual teaching. When being asked whether they are willing to use Solaris in their OS class, most of them happily said yes. They also believe Sun Studio will be popular in students who will take the Lab courses on Solaris. We are currently working on the survey stats, and will share with you when the results are available.

On the afternoon of Sep. 22, totally 137 developers joined us at the
OpenSolaris Day in Shanghai. Kathy Jenks kicked off the event, then Erik
Nordmark, Richard McDougal, Kathy, Yukun Zhang, Fir Qin delivered
technical sessions, concluded with James Hughes' OpenSolaris BOF.

To avoid language problems we are projecting both the English and
Chinese slides to the audience, one on the front left side and the other
on the front right side for the English speakers' sessions. The audience
were very active in interacting with the speaker, and most of them asked
questions in English. So we assumed that at least a large number of them
understood the sessions that were given by English speaking speakers.
Notably Richard McDougal's books are so popular that many audience
raised their hands to ask good questions in order to win the books
signed by Richard himself.

All attendees received a copy of the localized OpenSolaris Starter Kit
DVD and OpenSolaris User Group leaflet for returning the surveys.

This is really a successful event. The audience feedbacks are much
better than our expectation. The only commend is the total length of the
event was 5 hours, which is a little bit too long. The event started at
1:30PM. At 6:00PM a small number of people were already hungry and went
for dinner.

Thanks a lot for Teresa Giacomini, Julie Welch, Liana Vagharshakian,
Chiu Wen and all the people who work so hard to make this happen. Also,
special thanks to Yukun Zhang, Fir Qin, Dolpher Du, Wang Yang and other
people who localized and delivered the presentations in Chinese, which
makes the audience's life easier to understand and learn OpenSolaris.

Let's look forward to the Beijing OpenSolaris Day for more OpenSolaris
enthusiasts in China.
