During the 2007 Spring Semester, on March 31th – April 1st in Chongqing University, Chongqing City, China, 33 university Operating System / Unix Programming teachers were trained with the latest Solaris/OpenSolaris technology and the Sun Studio. 2 China professors delivered tutoring on Solaris Lab Courses for OS and Solaris System Programming with Sun Studio, DTrace and MDB on Solaris . We have installed 35 Solaris machines so that all teachers finished the labs on their individual machine installed with Solaris build 60 and Sun Studio 11. We have installed 35 machines in about 4 hours of automatic installation in parallel from NetInstall server.

Below is the agenda for this training:

Day 1 Morning:
- Welcome by Hosting Institute, Mr. Chen, Chongqing University.
- Welcome by Sun China Engineering and Research Institute, Jason Tong.
- DTrace and MDB, Prof. Xiang, Tsinghua University.

- Panel Discussion: How to integrate Solaris/OpenSolaris and Sun Studio into university courses

All the teachers received the following materials / gifts during the training:
- OpenSolaris Starter Kit DVD (localized version)
- Solaris Devleoper Kit DVD (localized version)
- Solaris 10 Red Bible (published by Publishing House of Electronics Industry)
- Solaris System Programming (localized version, published by Publishing House of Machinery Industry)

During the Panel Discussion in the afternoon of Day 2, we gave introduction to the following topics:
- OpenSolaris Programming Contest (under preparation)
- Solaris Experience Center (
www.unix-center.net)
- Special Initiative to Promote Solaris/OpenSolaris and Sun Studio in University OS / Unix Programming Lab Courses
- Sun Academic Initiative

The teachers were very interested in these programs. They all believed that these will help them a lot in their actual teaching. When being asked whether they are willing to use Solaris in their OS class, most of them happily said yes. They need more documents on Sun Studio/DTrace/MDB to integrate them into the Lab courses.

After quick screening of the survey forms, below are the highlights:
1. 33 professors from 14 universities attended the training
2. 12 professors are planning to integrate Solaris into their OS/ Unix Programming courses. (36.4%)
3. professors from 5 universities are going to integrate Solaris into their curriculum. (35.7%)

We are currently working on the survey statistics, and will share with you when the results are available.
