ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM/ICPC) Asia Regional Contest (Shanghai) got started from Nov. 21. We have finished the special and successful University Tour for ACM/ICPC in Shanghai University, however, its value are far beyond this, we will have engaged thousands of student/professor from hundreds of universities to adopt Solaris+Sun Studio+Netbeans for the coming contests. And we have collected a lot of experience of ACM contest event organization for Xi'An contest and coming year's contests in China.
At the Beginning Ceremony of ACM/ICPC on the morning of Nov. 21, Sun Microsystems Inc. was invited to deliver the welcome speech as the collaboration partner. Jason Tong, Manager of Communication and External Collaboration Department, Sun China ERI delivered the welcome address. Besides introducing the Open Source Movement made by Sun like Open Source Solaris, SPARC, Java, etc. Jason announced that Sun Microsystems has sponsored the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Contest (Xi'An) in Xidian University during Dec. 15-17. Moreover, that contest will run on Sun's Open environment composed by Solairs, Sun Studio and Netbeans. To facilitate the preparation for Xi'An's contest, we have scheduled a Sun University TechDays in Shanghai University at this afternoon.
The officials of ACM/ICPC, Huang Jin-Xiong, Director of ACM/ICPC Aisa Region and Zhou Wei-Min, Secretary General of ACM/ICPC Council China expressed their special thanks to Sun's strong support for the ACM/ICPC Asia Region Contest in China.
ACM/ICPC attracted over 7000 teams in 2006 and over 3500 teams are from China. This year, we have sponsored ACM/ICPC Asia Regional Contest (Xi'An). In return, ACM will use Solaris, Sun Studio and NetBeans as standard programing environment in Xi'an, the last of 3 stops in China this year. We have announced the partnership with ACM/ICPC Council China and they committed to use Solaris as standard of all contests in China in next year! The hundreds of attendees for Xi'an stop, will be the first batch of Chinese students who will use our Developer Environment (Solaris+Sun Studio+NetBeans). To faciliate their learning of our Developer Environment, we have developed the Solaris/OpenSolaris Jewel-Box DVD package with automatic installation, which is designed for the developer registration promotion of OpenTech.org.cn, the OpenSolaris Chinese Language Portal.
At the afternoon of Nov. 21, after the rehearsal for the coming contest, all the participants attended our University Tour in Shanghai University. This is a special University Tour held at the scene of ACM/ICPC, the stadium of Shanghai University. All registered ACM teams altogether 112 teams attended. Each team has 3 students at least, plus 1 teacher and 1 coach. Together with the supporting team from Shanghai University, Totally 605 people joined our University Tour.
Before their entrance, we put the SCJP guide, NetBeans CD, OpenSolaris Starter Kit DVD with Automatic Installation and survey form on everyone's desk. Obviously, they were very interested in these gifts, and never stopped asking us questions - such as how to take the SCJP exam? Will the preferential price last to the next year? Some of them couldn't wait to read the guide, while others took it as a reference when rehearsing for the contest.
Since we have announced that Xi'An contest will adopt Solaris+Sun Studio+Netbeans, during my session on Solaris/OpenSolaris, lots of questions have been asked about the difference between Solaris and Linux, Solaris automatic installation DVD, DTrace, Virtualization, etc. we have given the "Solaris Red Bible" as the gift. Many coaches are requesting the "Solaris Red Bible" books for the preparation of Xi'An contest. As well, sessions of Sun Studio and Netbeans have also attracted so many attentions and lots of questions were raised. Moreover, they will start to learn and use Solaris+Sun Studio+Netbeans after the contest in Shanghai.
Because of the huge contest field, we rent a large screen. But, it seems hard to satisfy their need. They jumped out of their seat, and crowd around us from the beginning till the end. Most of the students attending the contest have great experience with programming language. They were very active in all technical session. We could feel their great passion on Solaris, NetBeans and Sun Studio.
