Tape – Is its Time Up?

How many times have you heard a prediction that some technology is dying or dead and it turns out to keep on ticking? Both you and I can list several instances of incorrect predictions – including the mainframe server and tape.

I first heard this back in the 1980's with the predicted “Death of the mainframe” due to client-server environments. Then again back in the early 1990's when the bipolar technology had reached a technological limit and the total 3 year cost of ownership for the mainframe was claimed to be out of line with the open servers. Well here it is 2008 and that server environment is still around – and growing.

Tape is another one of those technologies where we have heard frequently it is dying. Well don't look too close or become aware of the facts that tape is growing and continues to have major advantages over disk-only solutions. In fact, the LTO program released survey results back in March that strongly suggest that storage customers that use a disk-only infrastructure are now looking at tape storage as part of their tiered storage infrastructure for data backup and archiving. The LTO program provided another press release in May about a Clipper Group study that demonstrates a 23X TCO savings and 290X energy advantage by utilizing tape compared to disk.

Just earlier this month both Sun and IBM announced their first 1 TB native capacity tape drive shipping this summer, proving that the major tape vendors continue to invest in the technology and bring down the price per gigabyte. Tape continues to be the least expensive storage media and is a still the near on-line media of choice.

As my last example of the future health of tape, read the white paper from Fred Moore, President of Horison, Inc. “Tape – The Digital Curator of the Information Age.” In it you will find the facts about storage tiers and the importance of tape in the storage hierarchy. According to Fred, “Tape won’t go away, but its role is expanding from a pure backup solution to that of a premier long-term storage technology.” Fred concludes that “The 21st century data explosion is here – and tape is well positioned to become The Digital Curator of the Information Age.”

You can read more about the benefits of tape in my news alert “Tape – Alive and Well.”

The next time someone predicts the death of a technology – remember these examples and realize that these “antiquated” technologies often end up evolving to satisfy IT requirements for today and into the future.

LTO or Linear Tape Open is a magnetic tape data media that was initiated and developed by IBM, Seagate and Hewlett-Packard in order to
counter Sony’s AIT tape LTO Ultrium tape uses a single reel to maximize storage capacity and thus is better suited for archival use.
So the LTO Tapes are the best option for backup storage, because Ultrium is very popular, very compatible to all.

Some of the more popular LTO Ultrium tapes are: The 183800 and LTX100G LTO-1 tape The 183850, LTX200G and C7972A LTO-2 tape. The
183900, LTX400G and C7973A LTO-3 tape The 183906 and 26592 LTO-4 tape.

These HP LTO-2 C7972A Ultrium tapes have a native capacity of 200 GB and a compressed capacity of 400 GB. The HP C7972A like all other LTO-2 tapes is fully compatible with all LTO-2 and LTO-3 tape drives and auto-libraries.

The Sony LTX400GWW is an LTO-3 Ultrium tape cartridge. The LTX400GWW LTO-3 tape has a 400 GB native and 800 GB compressed capacity. Transfer rates for the LTX400GWW are 80 MB/s native and 160 MB compressed. The Sony LTX400GWW is one of the first tapes in which the A3MP (Advanced Alloy Armored Metal Particle) technology is employed. This coupled with the highly accurate servo signal technology ensures that your LTX400GWW tape has high output characteristics, is better able to withstand environmental conditions and due to super orientation technology the metal particles are aligned in the same direction to reduce noise and improve recording. The LTO-CM allows for storage of cartridge related data and can be read with a cartridge memory reader, be it external or internal.

The Maxell 183900 is one of Maxells latest LTO tape media products. The 183900 is an LTO-3 tape that has a 400 GB native and 800 GB compressed capacity.Maxells patented ceramic coated metal particle process, the 183900 can achieve prodigious reliability and theoretically should last for more than 30 years in archival storage. The Maxell 183900 can also endure up to 1,000,000 head passes.
