A fond farewell is ahead for Sun.com and me. At the end of this month, I'm going to join the team at Cisco.com where I'll be helping with the Cisco online presence.

This is an exciting change, since I've been involved with Sun.com beginning with the launch of our web site in January of 1994 and have helped shape many of our key Sun properties including www.sun.com, java.sun.com and My Sun Connection.  It's been an exhilarating ride at Sun for these years, and we have a wonderful and talented web team whom I will miss. But, at the end of the day, you gotta love those Cisco TV commercials:

P.S. I've talked to my team here about remaking this blog into a Sun.com team group blog. And of course, I'm sure I'll be blogging from Cisco.com once I get settled.  Stay tuned for more.

Change is good, as a friend reminded me recently (this dulls the blow of your leaving). You have achieved so much at Sun, and helped the company in so many ways (and helped me personally too), that you've left lasting and positive impression for all of us. Cisco is damn lucky to have you, and I wish you success and good fortune. But, you'll be missed. A lot. Great video, btw.

All the best, Martin! Let me know when you're ready to syndicate your Cisco blog on the Sun Alumni Planet so we can continue to follow your blogging.

Martin, you are an incredible leader and you will be greatly missed. I didn't think it was possible for someone who named their dog "Java" to ever leave Sun. I would have bet money that you had <font color=#5382A1>Sun Blue</font> running through your veins. At least we will always have you as "RSS man" <img src=http://dirtrodders.com/sun/DSC00386b.jpg>

Ack, sorry for the formatting error...

Martin, you know, I noticed the share price of Sun falling and falling and falling today and thought, "there can only be one reason for this!" And, well, sure enough - you're leaving. Guess I'll buy some Cisco..... D.

Now I can say that I know the real Cisco Kid! (though few will remember that reference) Congratulations. Sun's loss, Cisco's gain.

Martin: I never thought I'd see the day -- after your nearly 20 years at Sun -- when you'd make the big move. Congratulations to you. You accomplished great things there at Sun, and (finally) felt the pull to do great things elsewhere. What a legacy you leave behind, but you take great expertise to Cisco. Personally, I'm glad you're making the switch because you'll be nearby in the S.F. Bay Area so we can get together. Professionally, I'm glad since Cisco is such a strong and forward-leaning company that you'll be able to do so much there. Congrats to you ... and to Cisco for being smart enough to snap you up. See you around town... Mark Yolton

Martin: Wow--congratulations! Cisco is lucky to have you and I'm very relieved to hear that you'll still be on Council #1. :) SYP

Hey Cisco, treat him well. We're happy to welcome him back any time he wants.

Martin - you have always been such an amazing diplomat here, working across all the web teams and BUs to get great things done. I could always count on you for your advice and for just doing the right thing. All the best in your new gig! Cisco is lucky to have you. Welcome back to the Bay Area! Hope to see you soon.

Your talent, passion and great work will be missed at Sun. Best of luck @ Cisco - they are one lucky bunch.

Martin, can't believe you're leaving. But, Cisco is another great company and I'm certain you'll make a lasting contribution there too. It was great collaborating with you over the years - please keep in touch (like publish your new blog address...)

It's hard to image you not at Sun! Enjoy this new adventure Martin and please keep in contact. You've been such an amazing driver for so many things at Sun and your presense will be missed. I have learned a lot from you over the years!

It will be exciting to hear your new stories and Cisco is SO very lucky to get you.

Keep in contact and enjoy going back to CA and being able to visit the ocean!

Martin, it's sad to see you go. It's been great working with you for so long over so many different projects. Stay in touch and we'll all look for great things at cisco.com!

Very sorry to see you go Martin - it's been a great deal of fun along the way but I'm sure I'll be seeing you when I'm out in CA...best of luck at Cisco -- and if you need anyone to dance in their boxers in front of the execs, just let me know (I'll find someone other than myself ;-)

Posted by Dave Hofert on May 11, 2007 at 04:15 PM PDT #

Wow, Martin, it's hard to believe it's been almost 10 years we've worked together here at Sun. It will definitely not be the same without you, and we'll really miss the opportunity to brainstorm with you and benefit from your creativity and thoughtful problem solving. I wish you nothing but the best in your new role, and welcome back to California!

Posted by Gary Zellerbach on May 11, 2007 at 04:30 PM PDT #

Martin, Damn its been a good run!! You are, and have always been, one of the most inspiring people I've ever worked with. Best of luck, and don't be a stranger!

Posted by Rich Sands on May 11, 2007 at 05:23 PM PDT #

Marty, I have been informed of your departure, which I'm sure is sad news to the sun.com team, but we all need to move on to other things. Sadly, I will soon have to edit my homepage from your sun.com blog to your cisco blog (which im hoping is in production asap). It's hard to leave a place that you can find comfort and familiarity in, but variety is the spice of life!!. Good luck with Cisco!!!!

We will miss you greatly, Martin. You are an amazing person to work for and I feel incredibly lucky to have had that opportunity for 2 1/2 years. Cisco is really lucky, because any company that you work for will get the intelligence, diligence and passion that you have for driving great customer experiences. Also, you are just a great person and you really bring people together. Your renaissance nature will be missed-but I don't plan to lose touch. :)

Was it something I said???? Kee-raist, Martin, it never occurred to me that you would leave Sun. You just associate a company's identity with some people, you know? Cisco is lucky to have you. I wish you the best of luck over there. Now tell me, honestly.... was it because of the story I posted about you and Hofert at the El Cortez Social Club in Bucharest? I'll take it down if it'll change your mind. I swear!

Posted by Rick Ramsey on May 14, 2007 at 11:31 AM PDT #

If you're lucky, you find one or two people in your org that can make your ideas better. People you can turn to for brainstorming and general blue-skying - but with a foundation in reality. Martin, you're one of those folks. Where or where will I take my whacked out ideas now?? Best of luck - we'll miss you.

Hi Martin, I just wanted to express how sad I am to see you leave, but how happy I am for you to seek a new adventure. We will all miss your ability to keep a vision alive and help us drive it. I have never worked with someone so incredibly smart. You can remember the last detail on projects everyone else has forgotten about. Good luck to you at Cisco...they are lucky!!!! -Margaret p.s. see you in CA

Martin, you're a super star. Your legacy speaks for itself. You're an exemplary professional. I'm lucky to have been the beneficiary of your talents and perspective. We all are. You leave everything you touched so much better than you found it. You'll be greatly missed. I wish you all the best. To new beginnings!! Mary

To an organization many are considered talented and valuable, few are considered critical and no one typically is irreplaceable EXCEPT for Martin Hardee. SUN is losing a major asset, for sun.com he embodies so much history, context and vision. His legacy is his own personal "human network" of the people he touched and enriched SUN. I and your SUN family cheer you on as you go and write another exciting chapter of achievements and impacts.

Martin, I'm so happy for you but will miss you at Sun. We were hired around the same time in Sun's East Coast Division and have been friends ever since. Now we can see each other again in CA. That's the good part!

What can I say except I’ll miss you here at Sun. You’ve always been an inspiration to me, most notably in your complete candor and constant optimism in working with all of us and our challenges. I’ve really appreciated the incredible vision you’ve brought to this group, the way you always championed the customer experience, and your constant efforts to keep us in communication with so many other groups important to our work. Your new adventure sure sounds terrific and I wish you all the best.

"Gotta love those commericals"?! They're just typical ad agency efforts that look the same as every other commercial for global banks/airlines/oil companies/whatever, trying to impress upon us how wonderfully culturally-sensitive they are. Very tired and predictable, so I certainly hope they're not representative of the environment you're moving to!

Posted by Calum on May 19, 2007 at 06:49 AM PDT #

Holy cow, I hope I can live up to half of these accolades. I am not quite so smart as everyone makes out here; I just have been privileged to work with amazing people and bask in their great work. It has been wonderful working with everyone at Sun over the years and I especially have to thank our Sun.com design, publishing, and engineering teams for keeping Sun.com and its 2 million+ pages working so well and looking so good. P.S. This is a really touching going-away card! - Martin

Martin, thnx for sharing this with me. I felt sure, back in the radio daze, that you were talented (and funny). Now, I see what a special and unique man you became. Glad I knew you when.

Posted by Jinx on May 25, 2007 at 09:13 AM PDT #

Best of luck, Martin! Is this because we just started working with you?! All the best from your friends at Clear Ink.

Last day at Sun after 20 years ... damn, you will be sorely missed. You are a great Sun advocate, talented at any project and wonderful human being! To quote the might wizard in the Wizard of Oz, "A heart can not be judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others". Best of luck to you!

Posted by Elaine on May 25, 2007 at 04:00 PM PDT #

Elaine, you sure hit the nail on the head with the wizard comment. Martin, you have been an inspiration to all who have worked with you, especially me. It's been great working for you for the entire time I've been at Sun, nearly 7 years. Not many employees can say that they've had the same manager their entire time at Sun! ;-) Thanks for all you've taught me. I'll miss you TONS but can't wait to hear about the great things I know you'll be doing at Cisco. Ciao for now. ~~Sara

Martin, I know I have spent considerable time at all companies I have worked for since Sun looking for the Martin Hardee clone - nice, ridiculously smart and very funny. Never found the clone - good for Cisco that they managed to spirit you away. All the best - will always remember the Table 18 lunches on Castro.
