[ Telecommunications ] What Mobile Device Will You Carry?

Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's esteemed CEO, asks readers to think about what mobile devices they will carry in the future, and Rich Sharples, one of Sun's marketing gurus, examines similar questions.

Today, I still have my SideKick II (SideKick III is already out), and use Danger's HipTop technologies, including its blogging and e-mail technologies. Here, are some examples of photos I've taken with my device and which I've already blogged on my hiplog.

The first names begin with K, K, A and J, left to right. You may be able to solve the puzzle by reviewing Apache/Derby mailing lists. Or you might go for this larger photo identification puzzle. You'll have to identify the Brazilians, too.

Or, look at the picture of Rich Green and John Kannegaard blogged right from the scene of Java's 10th anniversary at our Santa Clara campus before Rich returned to Sun.

Back in November of 2004, I used my SideKick to blog from a stadium in Barcelona during the Barcelona-Madrid game. Of course, the mobile connnectivity in Barcelona was truly amazing even in the very crowded Barcelona stadium. The result: a vastly improved battery life. "Why can it be done in Barcelona but not along Highway 280 in California?" I keep asking myself everytime I drive up to our San Francisco offices. (Obviously, I also ask why we don't have even better modern transportation systems here in California, including SMS-based, on-demand personal scheduling for the use of such systems. That would be the icing on the cake. I guess we first have to get the ingredients to bake the cake.)

Finally, there are these surprising things that simply happen when the device is lying around in the house, for exmaple, when Negin, my 8 year old, experiments with her nack for phtography.

By the way, I did lose my first SideKick II in the Chicago Airport in 2005 but had to replace it immediately because of all the value I had deposited on the hiptop network. I only wish T-Mobile would give me more space on the servers (with the same contract, of course). If they did, I might even check my Sun e-mail using the device. Another good feature would be to maintain multiple e-mail profiles, concurrently, on the hiptop server. Last time I tried to receive e-mail from multiple e-mail accounts, they would all go to the same HipTop inbox.
