Mustang beta has shipped! I'm personally very excited. I started at Sun just about 4 months ago and was told from the beginning that I'd be taking over the program management duties for Mustang once we shipped beta. Well, that time has come and I'm ready. I have had the opportunity to watch, and hopefully help with the planning and preparation by the entire team. What I was perhaps the most impressed with was the concern for quality and compatibility with previous releases and existing customer applications. The second thing that I am very impressed with is that the team wants to ensure that we have enough time built into the schedule to accommodate external feedback. I've been involved in past beta releases (not at Sun), and this was not the focus and it really frustrated customers. We have consciously decided to schedule a second beta in a few months so that we can ensure customer feedback on some additional work and to incorporate as much of the beta 1 feedback as time permits. I've never been involved with a release that provides weekly external downloads. To me, this shows Sun's commitment to the quality of the release. I wondered, and have heard that others have wondered why we need beta, when the weekly snapshots are always available. I can confidently tell you that the beta release has gone through thorough testing by our quality organization. It's my understanding that the weekly snapshots are testing minimally, prior to making them externally available. Obviously testing continues, but with one week between snapshot builds, only so much can be verified. I hope you are successful with this beta release, and that you provide feedback in any areas you are concerned about. As a new Sun employee, I am proud to be part of this release and confident in its quality and in the integrity and dedication from this group.
