One Day Sun Workshop at Sastra University

Daksh 2008 – The Sun Workshop

Its giving me pleasure to write regarding the successful one day workshop at Sastra University.
The day started by 10.00 AM .

Myself and Bipallav started with some movie slides
Then I started the Presco on “ PARTICIPATION AGE”
the second presco contains Open Solaris,DTrace- done by Bipallav
in the afternoon session also Dtrace was continued for some time.
Basic scripts in DTrace
Then I did with 2 demos in Netbeans
Developing Class Libraries
Importing and exporting projects-java documentations-JUnits

Then we started the Lab session
1.Basic installation
2.Jumping from windows to Solaris
3.Dtrace
4.Netbeans

The Students showed more participation during the lab session.

Vineet was supporting us for the whole day.
Volunteers made all arrangements needed for labs

Totally 120 students participated ( around 71 from SASTRA and 49 from other universities ).

goodies and cds were delivered to the students.

Srikanth and Nikhil have arranged for good hospitality and transport facilities.
Dwarkanath worked hard in coordinating the workshop

Among my all workshops and seminars
I m feeling this one as an accomplished one, with more amount of students participation.

Hats off to Sastra guys.........

Softwares in Hand

hello all,

here are some simple steps install softwares in
solaris--to people who are new to
solaris..


just get into the
solaris4you website


In that page download the software u want..
Then here is an example

If you want to install
JPlayer
Downloade the file jplayer.zip

unzip the file using

unzip jplayer.zip

Then after the extraction is done
perform
jar -xvf filename.jar for all
jar
files

Then run the jplayer.jar file in BIN
directory....


This may be a very simple one....so only i have
already mentioned ( those who are new to solaris...can
make use of this )

Last Week We had a Good discussion on "Code For Freedom-Guidelines"......Our MCA students are interested in registering for the contest.


Mr. RAM GOKUL explored about Communities...And explained how to actively participate in it.
Selvan collected the list for registerations

I fired out the open solaris project packs....
We made a demo on how to download the utilities.....

As they are first year PG students we demonstrated how to use Belenix and we distributed some CDs to staff and students

Code for Freedom Contest

Sun has announced the Code for Freedom contest , on the eve of India's 60 th year of Independence.This is an open source  project contest for students (Graduate/UG)belonging to all colleges in india.

Here is an article in Hindu about it.  describing the importance of the contest.

The contest was launched this month and will last till 06' Febraury 08 .This basically aims at contributing for five major projects,

Open Solaris,

Contribution can be done by solving bugs. search for bugs and try fixing them.

NetBeans.

 Project GlassFish

Contribute in terms of code, or documentation or bug fixes.

Open Portal

Portlets, Bugs, RFEs, Documentation

Apache Derby

 Contribute in terms of code.

Second day in PSG

The interesting happenings of second day in PSG…

I went to the Lab by 9.00 Am (Great…No one was there)
I waited for 1 hour Mr.Nataraj and around 20 students came…
Ramya was on time…

Then Ramya started with introduction and explained the campus ambassador program.

Then we went on “ how to use Solaris?”
We demonstrated in the projector. The students followed in their systems…
Then I talked on How Application management is superior in solaris when compared to Windows..
Then Difference between SCSI and IDE…
I talked about RDMA (under which the accessing of SWAN and the smart cards.we showed the smart cards)

Then Ramya continued with the Community aspects and
How to join that…
What r the uses…
Etc…

Then I continued With Sun Studio ( the slide that I have already sent to You )
They asked questions on
1. Solaris Volume Manager
2. Performance analyzer
3. Parallel Processing
4. CMT
5. Etc…

Then I sowed them Netbeans……

They argued with us regarding the difference between netbeans and Sun Studio..

Thus the session ended by 12.45…

Mr.Nataraj asked us about the NIC Problem...

First day in PSG.....

Here are the interesting happenings of the first day in PSG…

I reached Coimbatore by 3.30 AM in the morning..
Mr.Gowri Sankar who guided me to reach PSG

Then Mr.Syed Ibrahim,Lecturer in CSE Allotted room for me..

Ramya was waiting for me there…

We went to meet Mrs.karpagam, Lecturer in Cse,PSG…
She provided as small refreshment….
And sent two lab assistants with us to help us…

We went to software development lab….
We tried to install Solaris…There followed the monitor Problem….

We took the CPU (Which has the DVD drive) to the OST lab…
Then I went to IT Dept…
Consulted with the Sys Admin….
He forwarded me to Mr.Murali(doing his M.tech there ) and mr.Saravanan (who is nominated for CA)

We tried with Solaris Build 64…. Installation was successful
We checked it with the Projector and media player…

Then we sat for a round table discussion
There we discussed a lot regarding the happenings in both of our college…..
We planned for some tech days in both of our colleges using Guidelines shared between as…

Then We went to M.Tech (PG Laboratory for IT)
There around 11 systems has Solaris….

They showed me some latest installations…
I Met Sankar and Akila Over there (they fully dedicate themselves towards Solaris)

Then came Mr.Nataraj…
I went to his room…
I presented some slides to him (as he is not attending the program)
Some of the questions shooted by him are?
1. Why asp is more used than jsp?
2. Why Sun Thin rays are not multi-application oriented?
3. Why SDM creates many problems?
4. What is SCJP?
5. How to get assistance for organizing this course?
I gave them some prescos regarding the SCJPand Learning Solaris….
I gave them Netbeans CDs….

Then Mr.Gowri sankar helped me in taking Printouts for the contents (which can be distributed to Staff members) he said he wil be helping for photocopying it……

Summer camp ended

All,
The Summer camp on Solaris And Netbeans Was promoted in a good manner

I thank all for their support in bringing this as a great success.

The project topics given to the students are
1. Optical character Recogition
2. Face recognition
3. Complete Office Automation
4. Students Information Tracking System
etc..

who made proper facilities at free of cost

Who gave tech talks on dTrace and gave some sample coding exercises
6. Mr.vijaya Kumar Lecturer CSE, for his off-site guidance

and all the participants for their encouragement.

We made the first day as the Sun Tech Day
watercans and Pens were distributeed to the students..
Files,CDs and many goodies...

I Thank Mr.Gopal from III IT who took care for the refreshments for the participants
Solaris was installed in all the 40 systems in the Open Source Technology Lab by conducting an Install Fest..
