We in Solaris Cluster Engineering believe strongly in the "All work and no play (makes Jack a dull boy)" idiom. To that end, we try to maintain a healthy balance of work and extra-curricular activities in our professional lives ... remember the YouTube videos High Availability: Solaris Cluster and If Life Ran on a Solaris Cluster we blog'ed about a few weeks ago? I recently got an opportunity to do something really worthwhile on the extra-curricular front.
On March 3rd, I had the privilege of giving a keynote to middle and high school girls (and their parents) about pursuing careers in science and technology. This was at a National Science Foundation sponsored conference called "Technology Powered by Women", held in Kansas City. Needless to say, I felt a huge responsibility, considering the audience and the subject matter. I am happy to report that the keynote went very well, and I feel proud to have done this.

This was an excellent undertaking and I just wanted to say thank you for doing it. Not because I, or anyone I know, was there. But simply because the point of business is to develop, create and facilitate progress and this is the sort of thing that helps to do that. Companies that think they're just there to make money for themselves have lost the entire point of making money, and the entire point of economy – which is to enrich EVERYONE'S life including their own. Thanks for taking the time in making education serious.

That was a great idea! Were you able to convince more girls to pursue a career in S & T? I can still remember what happened during our career convention way back in High School. We’ve had lots of speakers coming from the S & T field yet most of my batch mates decided to pursue a career in business and management.

Science and Technology is indeed a great field. But because of the boring courses related to it, most people aren’t interested in pursuing a career related to it. Most are more attracted to Business related courses while some are fond of taking computer- or IT-related courses. The challenge, I suppose, is how to convince more and more people – not only girls – to pursue a career in it.
