This week on SDNtv, Joost Pronk Van Hoogenveen, Sun product line manager for virtualization, explores Containers, a virtualization and utilization technology in Solaris 10. Learn how the Containers capability exceeds typical partitioning technology.
Did you know that Containers technology can create up to 8,000 virtual machines on a single piece of hardware--each with its own file system and set of services? The Containers feature also offers fine-grained control over these virtual machines by adjusting how much memory, processing time, and other variables they receive.
You can use a single machine for development, testing, and QA, with each function sequestered in its own Container.
For environments in which testing and development take place in separate boxes, you can virtually detach a Container from one machine and move it intact to the other (a more powerful production server, for instance). Pretty slick stuff.
Van Hoogenveen also shares how Sun is porting Solaris to work with the open source Xen virtual machine technology. Like OpenSolaris, Cool Stack, and so many other projects, it’s another way Sun participates in the open source world.
Also this week, the Geek Gadget Guru talks about a new version of iRobot’s Roomba called iRobot Create, you can build your own robot.
Next week, dive into another of Solaris’ most powerful features: DTrace observability.
