Imagine being able to tune up your car while it was in use. You could wring out maximum fuel efficiency and performance depending on driving conditions--or troubleshoot a small problem before it left you stranded.
The DTrace troubleshooting tool in the Solaris OS and OpenSolaris project does something similar, analyzing application behavior in live production servers. Use DTrace dynamic tracing to find and clear bottlenecks and check performance throughout the software stack.
On SDNtv this week, Brendan Gregg, Sun’s "DTrace Guru," walks host Mark Herring through a demo of this amazing analytic tool that leaves no stone unturned.
If a program is performing slowly, DTrace lets you look at application functions, library functions, kernel functions, and more to track down the issue. "If there’s a problem," says Gregg, "DTrace will find it."
DTrace is years ahead of anything comparable on other operating systems, but you can put it to use and take part in the DTrace community today. Join discussion groups, browse helpful examples, or download the DTrace Toolkit, a collection of useful scripts developed by the community.
Go even deeper and visit Brendan Gregg’s blog and be sure to check out his book, Solaris Performance and Tools: DTrace and MDB Techniques for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris.
Also this week, the Geek Gadget Guru preps the Estes Hydrogen Fuel Rocket for launch. The rocket uses electrolysis to extract hydrogen fuel from water (one cup yields 200 launches!). Tune in next week to watch the launch.
We also wrap up SDNtv’s month of Solaris-related content next week with a look at the powerful security in Solaris Trusted Extensions.
