This month, SDNtv explores some of the features that make Solaris 10 the most advanced operating system on the planet, including Containers, DTrace, and Trusted Extensions. This week, the show looks at two projects that tie Solaris tightly to the open source community: OpenSolaris and Cool Stack.
Since Sun open sourced millions of lines of source code to launch the Open Solaris project, developers have flocked to take part. There are now 20,000 community members, and the community has made hundreds of code contributions.
If you haven’t joined the OpenSolaris community yet, there are two great benefits to doing so, according to Stephen Lau, Sun kernel development engineer.
By participating, developers get a sneak peek at features and functionality that Sun is building into future Solaris releases. When a new feature or version is then officially released, system administrators already know how it integrates into their systems. For instance, the latest version of Solaris, released in January, includes ZFS features that have been available to the OpenSolaris community for several months.
The second benefit is the flip side of the first. By taking part in the OpenSolaris community, playing with the code, and so on, developers can offer feedback directly to Sun staff about their findings, challenges, and needs.
Also this week, Dan Roberts, Sun web strategist, talks about Cool Stack, a collection of some of the most commonly used open source applications--all optimized for Solaris. Cool Stack is another way Sun participates in the open source world and empowers developers.
SDNtv's month of Solaris-related content continues next week with a close look at Containers, virtualization technology that lets you create up to 8,000 "machines" on a single server.
