On this week’s special database edition of SDNtv, host Simon Phipps explores PostgreSQL and Java DB. One is enterprise-class, the other compact and embeddable, but both offer developers cost-effective ways to solve business problems.
PostgreSQL is an open source, vertically scalable database that can handle thousands of connections. It’s an excellent choice for sales, human resources, and other demanding applications, according to Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Core Team Leader. As an open source project, PostgreSQL is free of charge, and Sun has included a version of the database with Solaris distributions since last June.
Sun also participates in the PostgreSQL community by contributing performance optimizations and other code related to the Solaris OS. All of Sun’s contributions become part of the code commons.
In this week’s second segment, Phipps interviews Rick Hillegas, Apache Derby Committer, and Francois Orsini, Java DB Evangelist.
Hear about the Apache Derby Project and Java DB (Sun’s supported distribution of Apache Derby) and how this database differs from PostgreSQL. It offers mature, fully relational capabilities, yet has an extremely small (2MB) footprint.
The compact size lets developers run an SQL database inside a Web browser. This opens up a host of functionality, such as adding persistence to Web 2.0 applications. Java DB is also a popular choice in the embedded market.
Java DB ships in JDK 6, which you can download here. If you’re interested in joining the Apache Derby community, get started here.
And be sure to tune in next week to find out what's happening at JavaOne this year.
