Last edition you heard all about the emerging Java market for mobile and embedded applications. Today we'll look at the other end of the spectrum--the enterprise market--where there’s another healthy Java ecosystem. Java truly is everywhere, from the handheld to the data center.
On this episode of SDNtv, Kuldip talks with Sun’s Karen Tegan Padir about GlassFish, an open source community around Sun’s application server.
The GlassFish ecosystem is growing fast. The latest version of the code includes all the enterprise features that data centers need--clustering, failover, and other high-end capabilities. As for the community itself, there are now over 1600 members, and there have been 2.6 million downloads of the code in less than a year. Check out The Aquarium to catch up on all the GlassFish happenings.
GlassFish also made news at JavaOne last month when Ericsson donated its SIP Servlet container to the project. The new project is called Sailfin, and this is leading-edge stuff for the telco market.
I understand that some folks have gotten confused by exactly what GlassFish is and how it compares to the Sun Java System Application Server, so it was good to hear Padir's explanation. Now I get it.
I can’t sign off without mentioning the amazing “gadget” the Geek Gadget Guru found for us this episode--an unmanned helicopter from Perrone Robotics. It’s about the size of a bobsled, and it’s used for extremely accurate, sub-inch topographical surveys. And just to reiterate that Java is everywhere--even in the air--it runs an on-board Java real-time system to integrate the data it collects.
Be sure to come back next week and learn about one of the biggest market opportunities for Java developers.
