I always think of Eugene saying that in Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues this time of year.  Especially when I get email asking if it's hot yet.  Yes, it's quite hot, thank you.  Apparently so hot my camera phone only will take black and white pics.  But it's a dry heat.

That's 48 Celsius to the rest of the world.  And that's after it cooled down 6 degrees from the parking lot we were in.

I spent about a month in the Middle East in 2001.  Rumor has it that in the UAE, everyone gets to go home if it hits 50 degrees Celsius - kind of like the opposite of a snow day.  Rumor also has it, that it never "officially" hits 50 degrees Celsius.  Any truth to that?

Comments:

There is truth to the 50C law. Mysteriously, it never officially appears to reach 50C here, regardless of what your car thermo is telling you. In the last couple of weeks the labour ministry announced a new law allowing labourers two hours off between 1230 and 1430. Unfortunately they didn't bother to consult with any of the construction companies before implementing the law, so we now have great big barnies going on about how the new law will actually get implemented. We'll see what happens.

We get close (in southwestern New South Wales, .au) a couple of times a year, usually up into the mid 40's. I've experienced 55C dry on airport tarmac a bunch of times, and I can deal with it far better than I ever could with a humid 30C.
