Earth Hour
Earth Hour is going global this year with a whole bunch of cities turning non-essential lights off.
I've got a better idea. Turn off *AND* unplug non-essential computers.
And while you've got them off, replace them with a Sun Ray that uses less power than your PC in powersave mode.

Thanks for the reminder! My husband and I just agreed to do this with our kids.
And for you, this is a good chance to score back some points with the appliances gods. :) (Do you remember that?)

Oh I remember...and live it everyday. I try to avoid even turning on light switches because they always burn out for me, but nobody else.

I've replaced all the computers wiht Sun Ray but now face the problem that the server is on 7x24. What I want is wake on LAN on the server to be triggered by one of the Sun Rays having a card inserted.

Chris,
That's a great idea. I wonder if it's possible though as you'd have to figure out what server to wake. You could store that info on a smart card, but couldn't retrieve it without having a session (PCSC lives on the server). Would have to be added to the firmware. I'll bounce the idea around some folks though.

Once I buy a SunRay as member of the general public, what sunray service providers exist to support my sunray? comcast? aol? sun? Been wondering for a while whether Sun intends the sunray to be sold to the general public.

Doba,
Sun Rays are not devices for the general public, nor are any other server based computing devices. The problem is the current ISP's want to sell you the pipe but they don't want to manage the users. That being said, some ISPs and ASP's have been looking at Sun Ray. With the availability of Rich Internet Apps where users can self manage their own accounts, this will change. You also have some enterprising cities like Gronigen that have deployed Sun Rays to their citizens. http://sun.systemnews.com/articles/96/4/workstation/15937

It's good to see earth hour really starting to catch on. An interesting note is that now all energystar fixtures require photocells or sensors so when not in use, it turns off. All our exterior lighting products we sell have sensors and if enough people start using it, maybe one day in the future we won't need earth hour anymore~

Does Earth Hour count if during the hour I run my Sun Ray and LCD off of a UPS in the dark (and cable modem, router and switches), and thus drawing nothing from the mains?
And even if it doesn't count, I wonder how long I could run for.... hmmmm.... Sounds like a podcast posting...
