Big hats off to the folks at Sun who did the Integrated Lights Out Manager on the 4x00 Servers.

It's something we don't tout nearly enough.  Not even a good google link if you query Sun ilom.

We need to fix that.

But if you have a 4x00 series and haven't configured the ilom...

(WHACK)

That's me smacking you upside the head.  You never have to touch the server once racked.  Not even to load a CD (can do network mounted ISO's of DVD's and CD's...even floppies if need be).

Comments:

Yeah, it isn't a half bad effort - and that isn't only for the 4x00 series - x2100M2 and x2200M2 has something similar. I've got to admit that I really like the lom on the v20/v40z for daily use becuse everything can be done over ssh and having a real terminal rather than the java based thing is rather nice (copy&paste works ...).
Either way, it is details like these that keep me recommending Sun servers over the competition that may be cheaper to get, but a hell of a lot more hassle to manage (there's other advantages like blazing performance compared to similar specced whiteboxes and significant power savings, but that's a different story :)
