Doing some (network) stress testing of Sun Ray's in "Nothing but Switch Gear" offices.  While my backside may be sitting in a chair in Dallas, Texas, the graphic above was put together by GIMP on a Sun Ray Server in India and I'm updating my blog via (gasp) IE on a Citrix Server in Tampa, Florida.  Pretty darned cool stuff.  Wee bit of latency going to India, but our font caching routine on Sun Ray and Speed Screen on Citrix make typing extremely useable, especially when the goal of this test is to provide the company I am at a method of ensuring that their data stays safe in their US data centers.  Domestic tests (i.e. Sun Ray in Dallas connecting to a Sun Ray Server in Tampa) has exactly the same response as being local to the Sun Ray Server in Dallas.  Cool!

Comments:

I've been using SR from home for >0.5 year now. It's kinda amazing that I stopped using notebook (beside presenting to customers) altogether. I used notebook for 8+ years, never did I think I could switch to an appliance. Looking fwd to PennStation and the next gen SR. Cheers!

OK, lets recap. You are in Texas. SunRay server is in India. Citrix server is in Florida. So to post a friggin blog, you have at least 2 servers in the mix and 1 SunRay thin client. I have: 1 pc. 1 connectoin to the Net. It works. Whatever happened to the SunRay being 'simple' and 'thin'. (I won't even go into costs)

Yes, let's do recap. Where is *your* data? What happens when your hard drive crashes. The point of this excercise for companies who want to give access their employees to something like source code. So, Let's say this company has developers in India but company policies will not let source code out of the US. I your scenario, you *and* your PC must come to the US in order to work. And how many people can your one PC have on it at one time? Sun Ray is extremely simple. However, the backend of server based computing must be well thought out.

now all we need is a client with a decent graphic card, and public net based ray servers and the future of computing arrives. my money is on SUN and microsoft getting into bed together and finally sorting out the 'next generation filesystem'
