Shirt Update: New Shirts for sale over at Giant Robot Printing. Please read here for details. I will be closing down the CafePress shirt store, but will leave the poster up for sale. After working with Ken from GRP, there is no way that all that text is going to look good on the CafePress Shirt. I fully expect to have all the prior shirts returned.

Update: If you don't get it, go here.

Comments:

Nice. For completeness, we need a bunch of cron jobs to keep (re)creating links all over the place, so that
rm
in one place doesn't get rid of the target. And of course there are symbolic links pointing off in various directions, some of which are real and some of which dereference to nothing at all.....

Thank Guys.
Yeah I know there's more to the middle east, I did not want to type out every country.
I also forgot to add to the whole WMD part, fixed that.
I started thinking about this from see a shirt on thinkgeek (rm -r /bin/laden) and listening to Richard Black joke about our plan for Iraq which was basically to "install" democracy. When ever I hear "install" I automatically think "computer related".

Its cool that a dollar for each shirt will be donated. However, much less cool that you will make $1.01 of that same sale -- if you are doing it for the charity, don't make the same (or more) money for your personal stash from it.

Posted by Dave on July 26, 2005 at 09:03 AM PDT #

Regarding. $1.01.
We have this thing called taxes.
If you open a store on CafePress your social security number will be used to reflect the income. So if this was popluar, which it won't be, my tax base would rise. If I did just $1.00, the donation is not going to offset the income.
So in the end, this is exactly why I was hesitant to do this. I'd love to find a better way. Like I said, I'm all ears.

Posted by ThinGuy on July 26, 2005 at 09:14 AM PDT #

Dave, you're so stingy or broke you can't afford to pay for someone giving you something that's so amusing you want to buy a T-shirt of it? There are many liberal and conservative folks @ Sun. To paint the whole company one way would be a farce.

If you really study the post I made, it's an accurate account of history, not a political statement. It's just odd/humorous that you can make *nix commands duplicate recent history.

That's a silly statement. Ever heard of /.? You don't have to look far to find a political stance from a geek on America's foreign policies. Just because they're almost all one-sided views, doesn't exempt them from being political views.

While I appreciate you're clever attempt at humor, I think you're being a little naive when you say that "true *nix geeks" don't have a political opinion on something as big as the war in Iraq - of course they do, to think otherwise would be preposterous!

Posted by n1xt3r on August 30, 2006 at 07:02 AM PDT #

> If you really study the post I made, it's an accurate account of history, not a political statement. It's just odd/humorous that you can make *nix commands duplicate recent history.

I wouldn't flatter yourself so much, when you were obviously being very selective in your "accurate account" of recent history. You fail to mention the UN's Oil for Food scandal, Iraq's government, Iraq's elections, Iran's role in the propagation of violence in Iraq, the death of terrorist leader Zarqawi, etc. etc.

Posted by 24.93.126.105 on August 30, 2006 at 07:31 AM PDT #

I don't think I said geeks don't have an opinion on the Iraq war. I meant the post I did (well over a year ago) wasn't meant to be as much of political statement as an attempt at humor. Of course it turned out be a political statement in the end. But like I mentioned before the humor (to me) is in *nix commands looking like history.

Posted by ThinGuy on August 30, 2006 at 07:40 AM PDT #

Point taken on the date, but if you want to get technical, then you shouldn't have called Democracy a failure in Iraq. It's a glaring discrepancy on your account, since that part of history was then, and is now, still being written.

I hate to get in a long winded debate here, but to suggest that things were stable or getting better in the middle east before the war is to neglect the reality of hate that has fueled much of the turmoil in the mideast for centuries. Remember Iran's ultimate goal? The roadmap to peace is a facade to the destruction of Israel. Even calling it a facade is giving it too much credit, as it should be quite obvious to any chess player.

Still for all that we may disagree on, I love the idea with the shell script, just wish you would've picked a lighter topic. :)

Posted by n1xt3r on August 30, 2006 at 03:29 PM PDT #

I don't think we disagree on much.

The problem I see with democracy in Iraq is that it won't be a secular government.

I have many problems with Islamic nations that rule themselves under Sharia Law (mainly surrounding the laws regarding women - none of which have to do with vanity, gays, and those who wish to leave the religion) and I see Iraq heading there. On the same note (religion), it's a major problem I have with the theme of the GOP as of late - stating that the framers never intended a secular nation. I can buy that argument, and I feel the free exercise clause shows that. But on the same not they surely did not want a state preferred/sponsored religion, which is why we have the establishment clause. The minute we allow that, it's a slipperly slope to allow laws that are in direct conflict with the Constitution.

If there is no respect for man made laws, then a stable democracy cannot exist.

Posted by ThinGuy on August 30, 2006 at 04:17 PM PDT #

Just to be clear, the vanity part should have been nested in another set of parantheses. I *do* have trouble with Sharia laws concerning gays and those who choose to leave the religion.

Posted by ThinGuy on August 30, 2006 at 04:20 PM PDT #

> they surely did not want a state preferred/sponsored religion, which is why we have the establishment clause. The minute we allow that, it's a slipperly slope to allow laws that are in direct conflict with the Constitution.

The idea that the establishment clause requires a seperation is one of the biggest lies in America today being used to suppress religion and is a contradiction to the protection of religious freedom which the first amendment guarentees. The Framers meant that Congress couldn't establish a national church. It was never their intention to forbid every little religious activity on government property or partially funded by the government, yet indeed that's what is happening under the guise of "seperation of church and state". The "Seperation of church and state" can only be found in a letter once written by Thomas Jefferson. It's beyond sinister how the courts have extended the clause to apply to the states as well as Congress.

Other lies in America today, include these two gems, "I'm from the goverment and I'm here to help you," and "The check is in the mail."

Posted by n1xt3r on August 30, 2006 at 09:52 PM PDT #

I'm pretty sure that's what I wrote. Perhaps I left the word national out of there. And by Congress establishing a religion, it pretty much means the religion of the nation or the religion recognized by law. I never said it was their intention to forbid worship, which is why I mentioned the free exercise clause. Be careful of what you wish for, it might just come true. Question for you...Would you welcome an Islamic state comprised of Sharia law as the highest form of law? As the father of five daughters, I surely would not. Finally, is it the courts or the ACLU really twisting things?

PS...It's sepArate.

If you really study the post I made, it's an accurate account of history, not a political statement. It's just odd/humorous that you can make *nix commands duplicate recent history.
Not political? You assert that all the evidence for the Iraq war was fabricated, essentially towing the Daily KOS/lefty party line. This is the kind of thing that rational people abhore, this revisionist history. If you were to give an accurate account of history, it wouldn't have included so many skewed and fictional events.

Posted by Tom on August 31, 2006 at 05:02 AM PDT #

If I was towing the lefty line, I would have put in all the "undelete civilians", "su bush", election rigging, and what not that so many people suggested. Why wouldn't I call the post "war bashing" as so many suggested. Why would I mention Wahhabism if I was such a lefty? On the other hand, why would the right admit to a breakdown on intelligence. Where is the proof of the WMD's? Hind sight is 20/20. Blind support or blind hatred to me is not rational. I'm not a fan of the Daily KOS, a blog which I never even knew about until I read about it on LGF. But sometimes those on the LGF side of arugument are just as guilty of towing the party line whether it makes sense or not. Is there a serious problem with radicalized islamic ideologies wanting to kill americans, jews, and others? Yes Am I a huge supporter of Israel? Yes. Did the current Jihad stem from Iraq? Doubtful. Did it even really start with American foreign policy? No way. Was Saddam a evil dicatator? Yes. Was it a strategic mistake to take out the enemy of our enemy? I think so. Did Hezbollah make use of the left leaning tendancies of the media to pull off a PR victory? Yes.

So tell me, is that left/right/moderate view of the world? Or a view of someone who considers all the information available and thinks for themselves. Anyhow, this entry is old news. Been around for quite a while. There are much more interesting things to see on the internet and far more interesting bloggers than I.
