Sun Ray Demo Kit
Friday Jun 15, 2007
The Sun Ray's are a really cool and useful technology. From the sales side of things, a lot of potential customers don't get it until they see it. Sun has a couple of Sun Ray demo kits available, but I decided to roll my own.
My demo kit consists of the following:
- Tadpole Talin - Solaris 10 - hand me down from my old manager
- Toshiba Tecra - Windos XP - hand me down from my old manager
- ViewSonic 17 inch monitor - Sun Ray @home
- 2 Sun Ray 1G's - eBay
- Linksys BEFSR41 - network and DHCP server - I am an engineer I have these things laying around
- Belkin 2 port USB KVM - again had it laying around
- Sun Type 6 keyboard and mouse - "borrowed" from a partner
- Various Ethernet cables - again I have these things laying around
- Samsonite Suitcase - donated by co-worker
- Java cards - old ones donated from IT
The kit has turned out to be very effective. I think people get a kick out of watching me set it up, and having a working Sun Ray environment in mere minutes. It also helps them to get how the Sun Ray work real quick. The kit has been very effective in getting us to several POC's around Sun Rays.
People often ask why I use the 2 notebooks. The honest answer is that neither of them is powerful enough to do both windows and and Solaris. I do have a replacement in the works to use my MacBook and VMWare.....
