Sun Rays in Healthcare

Saturday Sep 27, 2008

I support a lot of our Healthcare customers. I was recently asked to post some pictures of Sun Rays in a healthcare facility.

The first picture is a radiology system displaying a 3 dimensional image of a skull. The skull can be rotated in any direction in real time.

The next series of pictures show the same workstation displaying a traditional windows desktop and an information portal. A screen saver like feature that can be used to display information messages to the healthcare staff.

Here is a picture of a Sun Ray in an exam room.

Finally we have a Sun Ray 270 on a cart. The cart solution uses a cart from
Flo Healthcare with a VESA mounting bracket and a bar code reader and blue tooth modem from Code.

Hi. Can you describe how the skull image is displayed? From an app on the SR server, another Sol server, or an app on a Windows server. One challenge I have run into with Sun Ray is many users who need to have very high end graphics capability. Right now they use SPARC based workstations with 16 GB RAM. Those days are over with the end of SPARC workstations. This looks good if it scales. Any more info?

Many graphical applications can run on a Sun Ray, but not all. Quite frankly to see if the Sun Ray is a fit for your applications I would highly recommend running a proof of concept with the applications you are trying to virtualize.

The PACS system above is a windows based application. We are displaying a windows desktop through a Sun Ray server. For this particular application it works spectacularly.

I have several other customers who are moving away from their Sparc workstations by virtualizing their desktops with a Sparc server and Sun Rays. Also check out Sun Visulization System, http://www.sun.com/servers/cr/visualization/index.xml. It allows you to build graphical processing servers.

I would recommend reaching out to your local Sun account team to have them help you identify if your applications are a fit for these solutions.

Hi Adam,
The link is 404. Interestingly, if I go to sun.com/virtualization, it brings me to the same URL you provided. However, using Firefox 3.0.3, I can't go directly here (to the link you provided).

I provided feedback on the web page. Thanks for the info. It got to the right place.
