CEC Installfest

So I saw Bill Walker's blog about the Installfest going on at CEC, and had been thinking about going up to join in on the festivities...

Solaris on x86/x64 is alive and well inside Sun and the downloads are blazing away for our customers as well.

Jonathan posted some numbers a few days ago, and I hear it's more like 650,000 now. At this rate we're gonna top 1 million before Jonathan predicted at 30 days.

And you know, people like what they see in Solaris 10, as the Mad Penguin admits...

Some say Sun is drinking too much of their own kool-aid, but maybe the Mad Penguin got a hold of some???

PXE Server revisted

A while back I posted a blog entry about PXE servers which got quite a bit of interest. There were several people asking for scripts and/or instructions on setting up a PXE server. I have put some instructions on my personal web server, and you can see it at this link. There are scripts to download as well, so you can set one up for yourself.

Hopefully this will help folks create and be able to use a PXE server on their Solaris 10 installs. I have a PXE server setup on my laptop, and it's the ultimate installation tool to have for install both Solaris as well as flash archive installs. In fact, with most GigE adapters you can use a straight Cat5 cable with no hub/switch needed, since the Intel GigE and Broadcom GigE drivers both support the MDI-auto-detection, which will change the pins if you need to crossover. So no crossover cable and/or switch are needed, just a normal Cat5 cable.

I'll try to create some notes on creating and installing with flash archives in the near future. There are some caveats as well as some bugs that need to be worked around in order for flash archives to function properly.

Hope this document helps some of you folks out for PXE servers in the meantime.

Solaris GA downloads going good!

I think many people were frustrated this past week as the Solaris 10 release went live for free downloads, and the Sun Download Center seemed to be having a hard time keeping up with things. This was no small task, as thousands of users were flocking to the Sun site to download Solaris 10 for FREE.

There was even some confusion in the industry about what was or was not free. Please read the Solaris licencing policy for more specific information, and also note that you are allowed to use Solaris 10 for commercial use, for free, as long as you obtain an Entitlement Document from Sun. You can still purchase support contracts for Solaris, so if you need support, you can get it from the Sun Online Store.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of the Sun internal folks that have been helping to run, debug, and improve Solaris 10 on both x86/x64 as well as SPARC. It is the help of these dedicated people that are really making a difference in the end product. This is the best release of Solaris 10 to date. So, for all of the people that participate in the Sun on Sun concept, I sincerely thank each and every one of you. So many people have learned that Solaris on x86/x64 runs so well and we have the needed base of applications here today, that they can also use it for their system of choice now. This is quite an improvement from where we were a couple years ago, and it will be that much more of an improvement in the next couple years as well. Hopefully some of the folks who still use other systems on their x86/x64 hardware will be able to use Solaris on it in the future!
