REMINDER - SVOSUG - Tues. Nov. 22nd - ZFS - The last word in filesystems

*** Reminder ***

One thing I'd like to say, since Thanksgiving is upon us, is that there is a lot for the Solaris/OpenSolaris community to be thankful for this year. This has been one of the better years for Solaris with the addition of OpenSolaris, and there have been more features added to Solaris more so than ever!

But mainly, our group (SVOSUG) should be very thankful that we have been supported by and joined by some of Sun's best engineers. And since this is a ZFS night, I would like to give special thanks to ZFS team member Eric Schrock. Eric has supported and attended just about every SVOSUG meeting. Eric was also one of the key people to push for a ZFS presentation. Truely a great person to have in our community. Thanks so much Eric!

This months meeting is very special, as it offers a perspective into a technology that pushes the boundries of confinement on 32-bit filesystems. ZFS, the zettabyte file system offers us a 128-bit filesystem on top of our beloved Solaris/OpenSolaris, both x86/AMD64 and SPARC.

Please join our meeting this month and meet some of the ZFS team to explain to you what exactly it is that this new filesystem can do for you, and will continue to do for you into the ever so distant future. This is truely amazing technology, which has been released into the OpenSolaris community already. You can download a build of OpenSolaris which has ZFS in it from the Sun Download Center for free. Yes, you can see this technology for yourself and understand how easy it is to use.

We're extremely happy to showcase ZFS to the Silicon Valley Open Solaris User Group this month, and would like to give a big round of applause to Jeff Bonwick. Jeff is really an exceptional engineer, and it shows. ZFS is not something that the average engineer would try to tackle. And even more so, ZFS had a great team of above average engineers doing development, testing, documentation, and much, much more...(much thanks to all of them). but without the inspiration of Jeff Bonwick, ZFS wouldn't be here today. Thank you Jeff and folks like you that tackle some of the worlds most difficult problems!

Also, last call at the virtual open bar to see Dan Price's most excellent online flash presentation for ZFS, do yourself a favor and click to your nearest virtual open bar, and get a glimpse of it. What a terrific effort on Dan's part!

I thought that SV OpenSolaris meetings were on the *LAST* Tuesday of the month. That would be Nov. 29, not Nov. 22. (I missed this meeting as a consequence.)
