75% better disk performance from a Firewire disk over an internal disk?

This says absolutely nothing about Sun's implementation of Firewire support. And it probably says more about Apple's implementation of the Mac Mini that it does about Firewire disks. However ...

Slashdot passed on the tale of a Mac Mini owner who benchmarked a drive in a Firewire enclosure with 75% better performance over the Mac's internal drive. I find that amazing.

Why would this be amazing? I'm kinda surprised/upset at the whole slashdot crowd for making this a big deal. The Mac mini's are low-end, with the goal of being inexpensive. Hence the slow drive.

You want fast, get an iMac or a dual G5. Of course, you're going to pay more.

Why is this amazing? Two things.

First, a Mac Mini isn't THAT inexpensive.

Second, and it is borne out by the number of folks who have commented on this whole thing, there is an expectation that internal storage should perform better than something that you plug up to the system.
